Rectifier Guitar Amp

Re: Rectifier Guitar Amp

So, rectumfryers are like the holy grail?
I think they are nothing special.
A bridge rectifier is nothing but a compressor (functionally)

My 900 MkIII has atleast 2 (on of these operates the gain sensitivity (a.k.a. "diode distortion"<----:28:))
A 900 SL-x has atleast 2
JCM 800 has 1
Laney GC30V has 2
Orange Graphic Mk II 120 has 1
Even the holy Ampeg SVT Classic has bridge rectifiers...

In fact, most amps after the Marhall 18W have bridge rectifiers. Special?

I think all tube amps have some kind of rectifier in them, be it solid state or tube. That's not the point of this thread. The OP is looking for the early Metallica Mesa Boogie tone.

Question in the OP:
"Am I blind or is super-expensive Mesa the only company that makes rectifier amps? I was thinking a good but lesser brand would have like a 50 watt or something but all I found was Mesa. "

Nope.avi, Mesa isn't the only company that makes rectifier amps.

Re: Rectifier Guitar Amp

Check the Mini rectifier out you will love it, real nice cleans, crunch and thick gain. One of the best amps i ever owned, great tone all around.

The tone that was made using a MKIIC+ as a preamp into a Marshall will be hard to pull out of a recto.

You dont even know what a rectifier does do you? Amps run on DC voltage what comes out of your wall is AC the rectifier takes the AC and turns it into DC.

What your talking about is clipping diodes. The rectifiers arent even in the signal path.

+1. Rectifiers are also used sometimes in channel switching circuits but again it's for the purpose of rectifying the AC into DC

Re: Rectifier Guitar Amp

The whole "Dual Rectifier" thing is because a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier has 2 switchable output rectifiers- a tube based section, and a solid state based section. The tube based is looser, the solid state is tighter and more aggressive, giving you an option on how you want the bottom end of your sound to feel. The single rectifiers have one, the solid state, making them generally more aggresive

Re: Rectifier Guitar Amp

Do the triples have three?

They have 3 5u4G rectifier tubes but they also have a solid state rectifier. (So really they only have 2 types... but 3 tubes so.. heh) The solo 50's only have the solid state rectifiers.

You don't know what you're talking about. Rectifier is nothing to do with diode distortion.
Get know your amp first before making such a moronic comment.

Re: Rectifier Guitar Amp

How about I make it easier? I like Hetfields black album sound, the low end crunch with the razor-like high. That is my ideal 'starter' sound, from there i'll tweak it to my own liking. What low watt (<50) low cost (<$500) amp HEAD should I look into?

So does each rectifier tube correspond to each 50W erm... something? Follow me if you will, Duals have 2 rectifier tubes and you can remove one of those and two of the power tubes to be operated in 50w mode. So each 5u4G goes to a pair of power tubes in a Triple?

Buy a single Recto or a Mini Recto. They'll give the sound you're looking for. A used single can be had for about $700 give or take.

Or look for a used Rectoverb. Probably price it the same as a used Single Recto.

Re: Rectifier Guitar Amp

I would personally go for a used MKIIC+ or a clone of one.

nothing gets as close in my opinion.

Basically yes you have one rectifier tube for each push pull pair of power tubes.

Agreed... Some MKIII's share that aggressiveness and i can get in the ball park with my MKIV... much closer than any of the Recto family will get.
