Red Devil?

Has anyone got a Red Devil yet?
Opinions?

I'm wondering just from looking at the difference between the Pearly Gates DC resistance and the Red Devil DC resistance.

I think it is about as hot as a PG. I hadn't tried them in the same guitar, but they 'feel' about the same, compression-wise. I bet they are about the same output, though- no matter what the DCR says.

I really like it. It's one of Duncan's best imo. If you're looking for a sc size hb, it's a good choice. If you want more details about it, ask. Sc size hbs sound different than full size hbs because of their shape. I agree it would be in the output range of a vintage output full size hb such as the PG.

I read some saying that you lose the Strat-ness with the Red Devil. Not a huge deal here because coil tap, and most of us want a GOOD single coil size humbucker sound not a single coil variant.

I had a Hot Rails in there at one point and it was just too thick/over the top for me.
Right now I've got a DiMarzio Cruiser in the bridge. It doesn't sound bad necessarily but it's nothing to write home about either. The Cruiser still has that Strat snappiness which isn't real PAF-ish, so even though it's a humbucker it just sounds like a gainier Strat tone in alot of ways.

PS: One thing that I've noticed (and I am not trying to get crucified here with this being the SD Forum) is the SD pickups that I don't care for with distortion (the hotter ones: JB, Hot Rails, etc) sound like the best pickups on the planet when played clean and then the ones that I really like with distortion sound meh clean.
This isn't just SD pickups by the way, but that whole overall thing does strike me as being somewhat peculiar.

Anybody else find conflicting pickup sound qualities with the distortion/clean thing?

Better yet, anybody found a solution to the conflicting sound qualities mentioned above?

i have a set of red devils and i like em a lot. thick sounding, not as open as a paf but not as dark as a hot rails. as far as the clean/dirty thing, i think there is always some compromise. i like the way a paf type pup sounds clean, but a jb sounds great with dirt

The Red Devil is PAF sound based, so it wouldn't sound like the Hot Rails or Cruiser. It's crunchy and PAF sounding even though it is a sc size hb.

Yes, I am weird like you in that I like a fatter tone for clean, and find a vintage wind sounds better and more open with distortion. I think it's dumb how pickups are marketed the opposite. Hot is for HI GAIN and vintage is for clean. Uh why would I want a clanky sound for clean?

You can fix that by using a vintage or medium wind with a double thick magnet. It retains the openness of the wind but the mag increases the output, fills it out, makes it deeper and bassier, and reduces the clank. My Fralin Pure PAF with a double thick A2 is seriously hard hitting even though it was only wound to 8.4k. Fralin knows how to wind pickups fuller sounding even at vintage levels. Different winders are different.
