Reducing single coil hum

I notched out a 60hz signal with a narrow bandwidth on a parametric eq before going into the amp and it significantly reduced the hum and distorted amplification of the single coil hum. This question is for all the single coil guru's: In your experience, is the hum that you typically hear from a single coil pretty much located at that frequecy and multiples thereof, or is it widely dispersed hum?

On my Strat...widely dispersed.

Thanks for the reply. When I did it it seemed to reduce MOST of the noise, obviously there was still remnants of hum left. I was curious on how others reduced the hum on single coils.

If you don't use the middle pickup much, you can lower it's height until it is almost flush with the pickguard, that way, you can use it for hum-cancelling without losing the sound of your neck/bridge pickups.
