Refinish Les Paul Special Faded

I just won a Les Paul Special Faded(Humbucking) on ebay and it is the worn red.
I was thinking of making it brown like the faded SG's. Would i have to strip it or just add the stain/Laquer on top? I've sprayed quite a few before and am mainly concerned about the top coat on these....what is it ?
I also have a Faded P90 in the TV yellow and might put some clear coats to protect it. I gotta say, once they are properly set up, I love these guitars!!

Re: Refinish Les Paul Special Faded

Someone on the LPF forum asked Gibson about the finish on the Fadeds, and Gibson's response was that there is an unpolished coat of lacquer, 1 to 2 mils thick, on these guitars. On regular Gibsons the coat is about 8 mils thick, and of course highly polished.

So... you should strip off the lacquer before you apply the stain.
