Refretting an Ax.....big change of plans.

Re: Refretting an Ax.....big change of plans.

Thanx to all of you for your kind comments!

You're left handed? :D

Ha ha! That's a good one! The problem is that all the frets were put in crooked and I shoul've seen that. It would've saved me the trouble of being carefull when taking the fret's out, who gives a F about that if you're going to discard the fretboard anyhow. I was dumb.

Re: Refretting an Ax.....big change of plans.

Banged em frets in! First made sure there were no humps in the fretboard, you never want that.

Banged the fret ends in and then used the Jaws to press them in, beutifull tool, worth every penny.

Filed off the fret ends with an ugly home made file grabber (it holds the file at an angle).

Did the levelling, first with the file end, then with 240, 400, 600, 800, 1000 & 1200 grit sand paper.

Took a small file to round over the fret ends.

Did some crowning with this crowning file, I've tried lot's and this one IMHO is the best.

Some compound buffing, and wer're almost done, just need to do some ax setup and wer're thru.

Re: Refretting an Ax.....big change of plans.

The photos gave the impression that the fret-board was flat, ha! So I took a pic just for the radious, 20".

Re: Refretting an Ax.....big change of plans.

I got the neck mounted and did some set-up, a good fret-board with perfectly leveled frets makes things easy! The 20" radi allows extremely low action, I trully admire Kramersteen going totally flat. I will give the flat idea a shot one of these days!

The action is just 1mm (.038 inch) at the 12th fret on the first string, 1.25mm for the sisxth string. You can do four fret bends no problemo.

Re: Refretting an Ax.....big change of plans.

Impressions; very twangy 50s Rock tone, think of the Stray Cats. Very noisy too, it gives me the impression that these are single coils under a humbucker housing. I'll give it a closer check this Monday, didn't have more than 5 minutes yestreday, and today is chips n beer Sunday ha!

As for feel it's very cumfortable, nice thin neck and easy acces to higher frets. Although it was incorrectly placed so I had to do some serious shimming, luckilly it's a bolt on.

Yeah, a lot of what looked like humbuckers in old Japanese guitars were really single coils.
