Regular cover for 12 screw HB?

I live in Japan and cannot find any 12 screw-hole HB covers - they would need to be ordered from overseas.

​​​​​​There's a Dimarzio Rainmaker on sale that has my eye but it's uncovered. Could I just keep the screws down and put it in a regular 6-hole cover? Will screws touching the cover mess up the sound? Thanks!
 
You could put a piece if masking tape inside the cover where the screw polepieces might touch. Clamp it down tight before soldering it on. You could use a padded C-Clamp to clamp it down tight.

Seth Lovers and Antiquity pickups are not wax potted. Vintage Gibson humbucking pickups are not wax potted either.

I like the sound of my humbuckers uncovered. The cover dampens the treble very slightly. Some notice it. Some don't. I do.
 
The reason I mentioned potting is he’s talking about a DiMarzio pickup typically associated with high gain styles. My ‘62 LP/SG has real PAFs. If you use the amount of gain I’m referring to, they’re gonna squeal at high volume.

I hear you. I don't use covers on my humbuckers and remove them if they come covered.

I like the look and the sound better. Adds a little "whisper" or "air" or "kiss" to the tone of the pickup.

Although it's fun, I don't usually play with super high gain.

I feel it robs my sound of having it's own personality and feel super high gain makes everyone sound almost the same and have the same tone.

To me, players who constantly play with super high gain all sound way too similar. They lose a lot their individual voice.

It is fun though!

I bet that’s because you don’t spend a lot of time listening to that music. Somebody who spends all their time listening to John Petrucci or other modern metal players will probably think that everyone playing a Les Paul through a cranked Fender or cleanish Marshall sounds the same.

Gary Moore uses a tone on “Still Got the Blues” that would fit in any high gain metal context, but I hear plenty of him in it. If high gain robs someone of their individuality, it’s because there probably because there wasn’t much setting them apart in the first place.

So let's help the OP get what he needs!

Under high gain you are not gonna lose anything under the covers, IMO. So go for it. A couple of suggestions have been given...however - let's talk about going the extra mile for the OUTSTANDING result!

I have not been to Japan recently, but I'm pretty sure they have drills.

1. Get the cover of choice.
2. Press the pickup into the cover
- The goal here is to mark the INSIDE of the cover with something
- You could use a little nail polish or something to get pretty exact with that second row of screws
3. Take a drill and drill the extra holes!
- Tape the other side like it is paint. Likely don't need to but you never know
4. HEAVILY pot only the pickup
- I bet it will be fine.

I have had unspotted pick ups, P-90's Semi hollows and sorts of things playing in hard rock situations without problems. More about position than anything else, occasionally frequency. Yes - potting can help or completely eliminate, but I find the need for it is usually way over-estimated.

Easy enough to try it with out and do over if needed.

Plus - when done - there is the bad@$$ factor...

If you're still looking for a cover w 12 holes, I have a used Dimarzio brand one for sale on Ebay. It's black. I pulled it off a Dimarzio Super Distortion pup.
