Rehousing Ibanez Soundtank pedals

So, a few years ago, I bought an Ibanez TS5 "Soundtank" Tubescreamer pedal, with the thought of one day rehousing it. Has anyone done this? Would it be easier for me to just sell it on and buy something like a Joyo Vintage Overdrive?

Re: Rehousing Ibanez Soundtank pedals

I have one of those! It is a great pedal!
I think the pots & switch are mounted to the PC board, so unless you DIY the enclosure, it won't be easy to rehouse.

Re: Rehousing Ibanez Soundtank pedals

I have some pots, jacks, switches, and power jacks, I figured I’d have to rewire it so they were all off-board. I’m not sure how easy that will be though.

If you do it I think I have some mods for it. Since you pick up the soldering iron you might as well check them out. Let me know.

To be clear I think it’s crazy but if you have the components and think it’s fun, more power to you :)

It may just be easier/ cheaper to buy a PCB and solder up a new pedal :-( or find a stripboard layout online. I will have a look and see if it would be feasible to rehouse it with the jacks and pots as they are, and just put a new switch on it, bypassing the original one. I would be using it as an "always on" boost rather than a solo boost anyway.

That makes sense.

FWIW here are the mods I remembered:

Re: Rehousing Ibanez Soundtank pedals

Thanks. A buddy and I got a load of parts together and were going to breadboard out pedal circuits (starting with Tube Screamer and Big Muff) and then make videos of how changing values of components affected the tone, so people could compare. But other stuff got in the way.

I know BYOC has a forum full of mods to most TS pedals. You may want to check over there, too.

Re: Rehousing Ibanez Soundtank pedals

I have a Sound Tank bass chorus. I bought it new. Except for one of the knobs breaking it works great. I can’t see a need to rehouse it.

The pots are on the board, but just drill the holes in the new enclosure in the right place. And you’ll need new knobs.

Maybe I should do this to mine since a knob is broken. They have very long shafts.

The Sound Tanks were made by Maxon.

Re: Rehousing Ibanez Soundtank pedals

I’ve often found the Soundtack footswitches to be flaky. Is there no balm in Gilead for a footswitch?

Re: Rehousing Ibanez Soundtank pedals

Those switches are the first things that go. When you see how tiny they actually are, you understand. Many people replace them with a giant metal footswitch.

Re: Rehousing Ibanez Soundtank pedals

Mine already does the thing where you have to press it twice to work.

I got a Behringer plastic-housed tuner at about the same time (new though), my fiancée took it to band practice once, and it wasn't working by the end of it. I flipped that open, it has a tiny little plastic switch in, which isn't exactly broken, it just goes out of alignment. I've never bought a Behringer product since.

Re: Rehousing Ibanez Soundtank pedals

Yeah, I am going to have to replace the switch on my TS5 at some point. I just am not using it enough right now to spend time on it yet- been using an 805 or Bad Monkey.
