Released a New Single :)

Hey all -- been a while! I've been on a music-making streak these past couple months, and in addition to some exciting new material, I've been revisiting songs and sketches I never finished and overhauling them until they feel complete. I started writing this one in 2020, and I think the time I spent away from it really helped me think strategically about the arrangement. This the first one I've decided to call "done" and release. I hope you enjoy it!

Dude. That was unexpected, and weird. But there's something there.
I'm not sure about the drum sample sound, but the modulating effects, sound of the guitar especially, has a very Radiohead vibe to it.
I'm gonna listen to this again but in my car, I have a feeling the driving and isolation will amplify the good stuff.

I kinda like it!

Very cool! Catchy melodies. The sound choices give me a Puscifer vibe. Real fresh sounding stuff. My fiancée makes music like this too so I really enjoy it.

The title is a pretty deep cut for me, her sister (so my sister in law) recovered from a bunch of strokes which has left her with holes in her short-term memory.

So sorry to hear about your sister-in-law! My grandpa suffered a severe stroke when he was still in his early 60s and was never quite the same person after, and my aunt (who's been in and out of rehab for decades) recently hit a point of cognitive decline where it's clear she struggles to hold onto a thought, so I definitely feel for you. I hadn't even considered that it might be read literally -- totally just had the figurative sense of the way certain things tend to "disappear down the memory hole" of history. Thanks for the feedback on the track! I remember quite enjoying your fiancee's music, assuming it was the same person from 4-5 years ago or so. I think it was a track you helped with the mix on that you posted here.

Thanks much for the kind words folks! This is really encouraging. I'll post more as other tracks near completion :)

That’s the one. She’s done even more cool stuff since, some more similar to this style. Very cool you remember. SIL is still in her 20s and was pregnant when it happened. It happened because of a blood disorder. Luckily she and the baby checked out, besides the memory issues.

Very cool!

What's going on at the start, before it really kicks in?

Sounds kind of like someone is saying something that you can't quite make out. Cool effect.

Glad you enjoyed that! It's an old Yamaha FM synth (not a DX, but a B200). On the patch I made, I exaggerated the vibrato effect until it sounded almost like a portamento, then ran the signal through a Moog midi-MURF and adjusted the settings until it sounded like that. When the rest of the sounds kick in, that clip is being run through a couple eq plugins and a compressor to exaggerate the upper mids and help the "vocal" quality cut through the mix. The other times it repeats I tried to leave it more subtle.

I noticed that it repeats later, but I thought it was easiest to identify it the way I described.

Has an almost spooky mysterious almost vocal quality to it, really cool.

The track has some really cool sounds in general. Great work.
