I'm impressed with the pod's ability to at least hang in the same ball park as a real amp; I didn't think they got that close, but yours isn't too too far off from the real deal (at least through my crappy laptop speakers).

do you record most songs in sections like that? I've never done that - I always finish the tune's drums, lay those down, then throw down everything else over top. For me, I'd be worried about picking up where I left off and not having a knob set exactly the same. or will you re-record these parts when it's all written?

The JSX is cool... but to be perfectly honest, my honeymoon period with it is coming to an end. I'm starting to miss the 5150 .

I think you should always keep a 5150 even if you're going to be experimenting with other amps. As easy as it is to swap amps around instead of buying more amps, you won't have a 5150 next to whatever amp to compare it to. You've found your base sound and you shouldn't mess with it until you've found something that you're 100% certain is better. That said, I think a Mark IV or ENGL is barking for your attention.

The POD is totally cool for scratch tracks, but it's too far from the real thing for me to really enjoy it at all.

Yeah - I'd say 100% of my songs have been recorded in sections. I take DI tracks as I go, and even though it's just in the writing phase, I still make sure to tune after every few takes, keep the guitars as tight as I possibly can, etc, so that when I get the whole thing written and complete, I can just reamp it in one go and not have to deal with re-recording.

I absolutely hate re-recording songs... I dunno why, something about playing those tracks over and over and over for the second time just kills me. I lost a bunch of DI tracks for the Incognita songs in a HDD crash a few months back, and I still haven't gone back and recorded them, because I hate it so much. :lol:

Actually, I almost chose the MKIV over the JSX, but I prefered the juicy, wet feel/tone of the JSX to the more dry crunch I was getting from the Mark. What's ironic now is that one of my biggest complaints with the JSX is it's lack of squish/give that the 5150 had.

I don't really like most ENGL's, actually. The Powerball and Fireball are way too processed sounding/feeling to me. It feels like playing a POD - not much fun. They're cool for ultra brutal super technical deathmetal, but they sound overgained and under-mid'd for what I do, I found.

The Savage 120 would be cool, but I don't have that kind of cash lying around, and I'm not sure if I'd feel the amp was worth that much even if I did.

I think that I was simply destined to be with that amp. I'll own others down the road, I'm sure... but I think I really need to bite the bullet and hold onto one, come hell or highwater.

To tell you the truth, I'm amazed that you have such success with those amps. When I owned one I couldn't get a single usable tone out of it, and our styles and tastes are not that dissimilar. It sounded really tinny, brittle, and noisy to me... maybe the tubes were going bad or something.

The thing about Peaveys is that they aren't that expensive. I think you should get your 5150/6505 and hang on to it. Other amps can come and go, but don't sell the 5150 for anything... I'm probably preaching to the choir here, though.

Regardless, I think your tones with the JSX sound really good. I agree with your comments on the Rectos and Engls too.

Great playing and idea on those tracks.
But i think a Savage would be perfect for what you're doing. You know you want one But man are they pricey in the US.

Seems like a pretty interesting idea; I like the heavy tone & chug with the more upbeat-sounding chord choices.
