Whats your method? I have a Godin BG bass that is great but I think it would not only look better...but sound better with just a stained wood finish, rather than the thick color/clear thats on it.
Peace

Re: Removing factory Finish from a guitar....?????

paint stripper is supposedly a bit messy but would remove the finish better and a lot faster than sanding

Re: Removing factory Finish from a guitar....?????

40 grit sandpaper, elbow grease, lots of lemonade :D

And no "normal" stripper in the world will take off a poly finish.... they´re made to withstand almost anything, and I must say do a ****ing good job at it ;)

Re: Removing factory Finish from a guitar....?????

Yeah, those modern poly finishes are almost as tough as powdercoating. It's nearly plasti-dipped. The thing that sucks about sand paper is how quick it will load up with paint.

Re: Removing factory Finish from a guitar....?????

If you're very careful with it, I would even try a wire brush on a grinder. I've used it before, 'cause it takes a lot off, quickly, but I've also screwed myself with it before by going too deep.

If you're patient with it, you can save yourself hours on end by doing that, and then sanding once you've roughed most of the top layers off.

Re: Removing factory Finish from a guitar....?????

I used a portable belt sander with 60 grit to take off the plasti... er... paint that was on my Ibanez. Smoothed it with a 220 grit on an orbital sander then took swirls out created by the orbital sander with a sanding block with 220.

For the horns, well, start warming up your elbow or buy a drum sanding outfit. ;)

Re: Removing factory Finish from a guitar....?????

I used an electric heat gun and a paint scraper on an old body I bought. Brutal but fast and effective. One or two scorch marks, but they sanded out quickly. There are probably many good reasons why one shouldn't do it that way... and I'd be interested to hear them.

I prefer using a Blow Torch but that's just me.....

Re: Removing factory Finish from a guitar....?????

kleen strip's strongest/fastest stripper that ya find in a hardware store should do the trick. But, if you use that stuff, make sure you're covered up and are using gloves/eye protection. You get that **** on your hands and it burns like a mother****er.

Dont use it though if you got binding on the guitar...sandpaper works but takes a load of elbow grease, unless you got a power sander, but you still gotta be careful with those. More so on a carved top than a flat top though.

Re: Removing factory Finish from a guitar....?????

You would think paint stripper would work, but on the polyester finishes (not polyurethane) not even the aircraft stripper works well. Atleast, not on a 1997 Ibanez RG series axe. ;) Literally, it was like a coat of plastic had been applied to the wood. It even sanded more like plastic than paint.

I've tried Bix,Rock miricle, kleen strip and Aviation style's. Can't say I had good results with any. The only thing that seems to work is Sand paper and Elbow grease .:ugh1:
