So, I managed to pick up a Hartke 4 x 10 Transporter cab today. The price was right and the conditon was actually pretty good.

The downside is that the grille has been spray-painted with some artistic friggin' thing.

I'd like to get rid of the illustrious art, but leave behind the original black paint that's on the grille.

Worst case scenario I can just turn the grille around, but if I can do it right the first time, why not?

Re: Removing Paint from Metal Grille Cloth

YUCK! The crazy things people do to there gear.:smack: My guess...If you are able to flip the grill? There is a good chance of over spray or dips on the other side. Best bet would be to to give a good scuffing with some scotchbrite and re paint it with some Krylon Satin Black. Good Luck.:)

Re: Removing Paint from Metal Grille Cloth

How about repainting it? Just mist it black again.

Possible. My only thought would be that buildup of three coats of paint versus one is likely to look a little "odd."

Re: Removing Paint from Metal Grille Cloth

Maybe spray it down with some paint thinner, use a wire BBQ grille brush to knock off the heavy stuff....hose it down, dry & then spray it with the Krylon Satin or BBQ black spray paint????

How thick is the crap on there?

Is it a 1-piece grille or separate "circles" kinda thing?

Too tough to just replace????

Re: Removing Paint from Metal Grille Cloth

The stuff on there isn't overly thick, but it was done in a manner to give the "shading" effect so it isn't consistent all the way around.

The thought of replacement has come to mind. I was planning on contacting Hartke anyway for replacement badges, an entirely new grille might just make more sense.

It'll be fun to clean it up and try and make it look new again. But that's going to involve some serious time with one of those weird sweater de-pillers to de-shag the carpet on it.

Re: Removing Paint from Metal Grille Cloth

Before doing any of the aforementioned drastic things. Try using ordinary paint thinner and a rag. Wet the rag with the thinner and wipe a given area only when it is dry to remove a thin layer of paint each time. This method may give you a chance of keeping the original paint if that is very important to you. If not, sandblast the bugger or use paint remover and mist it with flat black out of a spray bomb.

Re: Removing Paint from Metal Grille Cloth

Just hauled the amp in and gave it some play time.

It amazes me how the bass community really despises these cabs at times. With my GK 800RB head and the G&L L-1505 it gets a GREAT sound to it!

Going to grab the Lakland and see how that sounds through it...

Last summer I saw Cold Blood (a 70's era brass rock band from the San Francisco Bay Area) and their bass player played through a full stack Hartke 8x10. It really had a lot of tight punch to it.

Personally, I have a lot of respect for Hartke (I play their guitar amp)

Re: Removing Paint from Metal Grille Cloth

So, I flipped the grille. When you look at it way off center you can see it, but you kind of have to look for it.

The cab may need more work than I thought. There's a few tears and there's plenty of chunks of carpeting hanging off of it. It may be more than is worth putting into it. The speakers are solid; I spent a few hours giving it a solid thrashing today and it help up fine. It needs a serious cleaning thought with a can of comrpessed air and maybe a q-tip for the corners.

Bottom line...works good....is ugly. All things considered it's a great candidate to gig out with; if it's ugly no one will want to steal it...right?
