I'm bumping this thread back up because the problem has returned. After a few months of playing, my sanding job has been buffed out by my left hand and the same neck (see the pictures in posts #10 and #18) is pretty much high gloss again.

Is this inevitable with nitro? Is the only permanent solution to remove the finish completely? I'm thinking of taking it down to bare wood and just putting a coat of Tru-Oil.

Yep, that's the only permanent fix. I've done it before - on a Poly-finished Carvin, no less - took me like 3 days.

The neck felt amazing after that.

sanding all the paint off your neck puts it at risk for warping. The paint protects the wood

then what about all the necks that don't have paint? like tung/tru-oiled necks?

they don't all warp but they are more at risk. Its like riding a motorcycle without a helmet, not everyone dies from it just an increased risk. If you don't protect it at all and just leave it raw the odds of warping go up even more.

Well I would definitely Tru-Oil it to be safe. Has anyone here done this to a Gibson?

0000 Steel wool. I've had this on many satin necks - just steel wool it back to satin. Play will turn any satin finish more gloss as its effectvely a buffing proccess.

Sanding it back to the wood to put tru oil on is mostly cosmetic - tru oil is a linseed/poly/solvent blend so you effectively you'd be doing lots of work to put a similar finish on in a different color that would turn gloss as you played it anyway.

Other options are to sand it back to the wood and hope it doesn't warp (good if its a multi wood neck) , or to try pure tung oil but that tends to feel tacky.

YMMV blah blah blah - but if it were me I'd just steel wool it to satin fo 5 minutes and get on with playing.
