removing the screw poles on a bucker?

I heard that this will kind of give a single coil type tone from a bucker?
What i mean is that if you take a jazz neck pup and turn it so the screw side coil is closest to the bridge and remove the screws that coil would be a "dead coil" right?
but it will still cancel hum?
the dimarzio blues bucker uses this type concept, it has only one coil with magnet pull the other is a dummy coil to cancel hum

Re: removing the screw poles on a bucker?

It will buck the hum, but it will sound like a very weak single, because:
1. The dummy coil loads the signal, making it weaker than the one active coil alone would be.
2. The Jazz is a weak bucker to begin with. Singles have a strong magnetic field at the strings and around 6k resistance of 42AWG wire. A Jazz isn't even close.

If you were doing this with a Distortion, that would be one thing - I'd compare the humbucking effect that you suggest with just splitting the pickup and using one coil and seeing which sounded better overall. But with a Jazz I'd suggest you try the parallel connection and try not to get your hopes up.

It can't hurt to try it -- you can always put the poles back in -- but I doubt you'll like the tone.

True enough. Give it a shot & let us know.

I have this with a Full Shred neck and it works pretty nicely for jazz sounding riffs. Only I did this by taking out 3 from each coil (like the Evil Duckbucker avatar, only on a full humbucker instead of the lil' series).

like that. Definately worth trying... it won't cost anything but your time.

A LOT of time on a Jazz model; it has 6 screws and 6 steel poles. ;-)
