BTW, to the original poster: I would install the PG and leave the pots alone, then play around with it for a few days and see how you get along. If you find yourself turning down the tone pot and leaving it in a certain position, then, as this thread illustrates, you have a lot of options. I'd probably opt to first try a lower value tone pot.

Well, I read all this threads and now all this pot talk is really confusing me. The new pup is on it's way, and although I also ordered a 250k pot think it's a good advise to leave the 500k pots there for the time being see how it goes with the PG. Maybe the new pup is dark enough to handle full tone once in a while. I really appreciate all your comments and suggestions; thank you guys! In the meantime I WILL READ all this again see if I can understand better. There seems to be different points of view. Thing is; in my guitar it is a lot easier to replace the vol pot than it is to replace the tone pot......so if it works thats what I'm inclined to do. WILL I LOSE VOLUME?

both my guitars have 500K pots and are very LOUD
of course when the volume is all the way up, the value of the pot shouldnt matter

ok I'm confused a bit too

all the way down - the hot is "shorted" to ground
Signal bleeds directly to ground without passing thru the pickup = no sound

all the way up - the hot is sent directly to the pickup
as if the pot wasnt there

I see the confusion

ahhhhhhhhhh
now I see
the value of the pot
presents a parallel signal path that bleeds some of the signal to ground always

250K pot provides a less resistance and lets more highs
bleed to ground

500K pot offers more resistance forcing more of the high
frequencies to remain in the signal path
this equals a more "brighter" sound

1 meg pot just increases this more

A lower value of volume pot will slightly reduce the amount of volume that you get from your pickups. (Remember, it's going to be less bright because you're bleeding off some of your signal to ground . . . this signal is thus being removed from the overall pickup volume.) It isn't going to be a huge amount of volume loss though . . . probably less than 5%.
