Replacement for Pearly Gates Plus?

I've got a 2001 Fender Double Fat Strat Hardtail that came stock with Duncan Pearly Gates Plus and '59. I like the '59 in just about any guitar, but the PG+ seems a little too bright and fuzzy souding to me. When I mess with my eq and get a better and warmer tone out of it, the '59 then gets too boomy and bassy. I usually prefer brighter neck pups with warmer bridge pups as I think they balance out better in sound that way, but I think I may want to keep the '59. Any suggestion on what will work well in the bridge with the '59 still in the neck? Duncan or DiMarzio suggestions are welcome. Thanks! -Joe

i think a cc might be a good choice for ya

CC rocks in a strat. Another option might be getting your hands on an Alnico II mag for the PG+. It should warm it up some.

Re: Replacement for Pearly Gates Plus?

The CC is one of the best bridge buckers for a strat IMO. I have a double fat that has the CC/APH in it....and I can't ever see myself changing that combo. It's really perfect...for me. The suggestion about changing the magnet in the PG+ to an A2 is a good one as well. You can also consider the normal PG for the bridge, and APH or hell, even annother 59', although I think you may find that too bright as well, but it is different from the PG+.

If you want to hear the CC/APH combo in my double fat strat, click on my soundclips down in my sig, and scroll down to Heavens Door. CC used for the distorted rythym, and the APH neck used for clean and solo's.

Good luck.

I posted something about this in my new thread, Why did Fender/Seymour decide on the PG? I think the C-5 is one step away from what you're describing, the JB 2 steps, and the CC is 3 steps away from what you're describing. That's how to gauge which pickup you should try next. I wish I could try a tremspaced black Seth Lover, but they don't make it.....I don't think.

You think the JB is closer to what I want than the CC? I had a JB/59 combo in my Hamer Special FM and took them out in favor of a 25th anniversary chrome EMG 81 set. I thought the JB had a sweet sound in the high mids but lacked low end (and the Hamer is a mahogany body with mahogany set neck and 3/8" maple top). I'd hate to see how bright the JB would be in an alder Strat with maple neck.

Re: Replacement for Pearly Gates Plus?

the CC would get my vote.
