Replacement Pickups For 1990 Jackson Soloist Pro

Howdy, I have a Jackson Soloist Pro circa 1990. I need a replacement for the front/neck pickup and I have no idea how to choose something compatible. This model has a humbucker at the bridge and 2 single coils in front. It also has active electronics, so I am concerned about the new one working with the existing electronics. Appreciate any advice :)

You cant use passive pickups with those electronics so you'll either have to completely rework the guts or stay with something active. With actives your options are very limited, with passives you can put almost anything into that guitar.

My Charvel #4 had the Jackson active circuit. I had to replace the bridge pup (with a 59 and then a CC) and it was always noisey. Sounded crunchy like a good distortion pedal, but was noisey! The shop that did the work said Emgs wouldn't be compatible with the Jackson circuit. Finally I had someone rip the circuit and Jackson pickups out and replaced them with a vintage rail neck, alnico II mid, and a JB bridge. I missed the extra crunch at first, but the noisey feedback was gone.

Sorry, Robert, but not this time ;)

The JE-1200 active Mid Boost circuit and its non mid boost relatives on the later Pro and XL series guitars work just fine with passive pickups. In fact, they were designed that way, and will NOT work with EMGs, Livewires or other active pickups without modification to the circuit. The stock pickups (J-100 and 200 Single coils, J-50 and 90 series Humbuckers) are all passive, pretty low output as well (SCs 5k, Hb 8k, alnico mags on all)

Any passive pickups will work with the circuit, but the higher the pickups output the more noise you´ll catch as well. I for example have a Dimebucker in my Model 6 with the Mid boost, and it totally destroys everything in it´s path. But I have to switch all the pickups off (thank god for mini-toggles) to avoid noise when not playing.

I´d just get whatever pickups you ´d like, and if you don´t like them with the preamp I´ll take the preamp off of you. If you´d like to keep the preamp, than you may have to tailor your pickup choice to suit, for example a ´59 instead of a custom-5, Classic stacks instead of hot stacks, ssl-1s instead of Hots ;)

Yep, what Zerberus said. Jackson pickups are passive and the Jackson pre-amp is active.

Re: Replacement Pickups For 1990 Jackson Soloist Pro

I ordered a S/D LITTLE 59ER for it. We'll see what happens... :)

Re: Replacement Pickups For 1990 Jackson Soloist Pro

I goofed. I ordered the bridge pickup instead of the neck pickup. What are the implications of using a pickup designated for bridge in the neck or middle position?

Now I'm having second thoughts. Maybe a DuckBucker at the neck and the Little 59'er in the middle. Do you usually use a neck bridge for the middle position?

Passive pickups work fine on this set up. I had a charvel model 4 with this mid boost in it and I installed a dimarzio super distortion and it worked great. The factory jackson pickups are not active. So there is not any problem in installing other non-active pickups. Why is it that when ever someone sees a 9 volt in a control cavity they assume the pickups are active????

The bridge pickup has a higher output and possibly a bit of an enhanced bass response. But considering it´s a Lil´ series pickup, it shouldn´t matter much, as those are a bit more bright and "jangly" to begin with

Most people use a neck pickup for the middle slot, but it´s all a question of taste, I for example uise a fullsize bridge JB at the neck and love it ;)

Just curious, What is your penchant for plugging the J/C Forum at every possible chance? Is Sully paying you something??

But honestly, I´ve been a member there for quite a time myself, and there´s very little if anything they could add that would be relevant here ;) :friday:

BTW, you may want to change your "template", the words are "sure", "brothers" and "out", same spelling errors last time
