Replacement pups suggestions for Fender Blacktop Jag HH

I have a Fender Blacktop Jaguar HH that I love to play, but hate the pups. They are testing out at 12.5K at the neck and 12.8K at the bridge. I play though a '79 Princeton or a Victoria Ivy League and through these small amps and the stock Hot Vintage pickups are muddy and dark as hell. I use this in the studio only so I'm not worried about gain as much as tone. It's got a Stoptail bridge and the neck pup measures 50mm and bridge is 53mm. Alder body with a rosewood fretboard. I love the vintage PAF sound. What recommendations or combinations would folks suggest? Thanks in advance! db

Welcome to the forum.

The first thing that I suggest is to check the volume and tone control pots. What resistance value and taper are they? 250k Ohms, 500k Ohms or 1 Meg? Audio or linear taper?

Long term forum member, Astrozombie, went through a whole bunch of pickup changes on his Blacktop Jaguar HH before selling it. He now gets a vintage P.A.F. type sound from a Gibson Les Paul.

They are 500k pots, linear. Ceramic 47uF tone cap. I expect I'll replace those too. I'd love an LP, but I REALLY like this guitar.

In my opinion, a lot of the muddiness comes from running high output pickups into a relatively clean amplifier like the Princeton Reverb.

For the bridge/Treble position, I would be inclined to go for either the Perpetual Burn or SH-16 '59/Custom Hybrid. For the neck/Rhythm position, the SHPG-1n Pearly Gates.

I like the Pearly Gates or Whole Lotta Humbuckers here into a Princeton. The PGs will be a little brighter, but the Princeton can sound a little tubby when maxed out. But you get a great, balanced pushed PAF tone with the WLH.

Thanks for the guidance so far! No one has mentioned Alnico Pro II (non-Slash) yet. Is there a reason why? I certainly like the sound samples I've listened to. Very sweet and touch sensitive to my ears.

I would say that if you like them, give them a shot. Or even the 59's.

Everyone has their favorite pickups, and there are a bunch of options that will get you in the right ballpark. From there it's just personal preference. I have an old Alnico Pro II in a very old Melody Maker and love it.

How much lows, mids, highs do you want? Do you want an emphasis in the lower mids, middle mids or upper mids? Firm or squishy bass? Rounded or cutting highs? I have tried Seth Lovers, Pearly Gates and 59s...all sound great in different ways.

I've had AII Pro's for quite some time. I recently acquired an axe with the Slash AII Pro's. As much as I love the standard A2P's, the Slash version definitely has that "je ne sais quoi" that makes them special.

I love the Alnico II Pros too. They are vintagey, and warm. I was thinking that was a sound you didn't really like.

Re: Replacement pups suggestions for Fender Blacktop Jag HH

might be a little unorthodox but id say a 59n and patb3
