Replacing Amp Speakers

I want to replace my speakers on my crate VFX5212 which comes with stock speakers with 16ohms. I want to replace the speakers with Celestion vintage 30's and im able to get 2 of em which are 8 ohms.

Would this be alright? No modification or anything like that needed right. i feel that theres nothing wrong with doing it but you can never be too sure.

Re: Replacing Amp Speakers

If the stock speakers are 16 ohms each then the replacements should be 16 ohm speakers too...not a pair of 8 ohm speakers. The tone of the amp will suffer if the impedence of the speakers doesn't match the impedence of the amp's output transformer. Lew

Re: Replacing Amp Speakers

Another question. Celestion Vintage 30 and Greenbacks were suggested to me. What are the difference between the 2?

Re: Replacing Amp Speakers

Jermoe,

You should visit Celestion's website. Lots of info about speakers up there.

I think the VFX has an open back cab, right ? If so, I'd avoid the G12M-Greenback unless you're pairing it with a G12H. The G12M doesnt handle bass very well in an openback cab.

G12H and V30 are both fine choices.

The G12M qualities lie in the mids, complexity, woody, warm sounding. 25w
The V30 has a stronger midrange, and a very tight bass response (dont confuse with "lots of bass"). 60w.

Re: Replacing Amp Speakers

well, the 16's could be wired in series or parallel, you'll need to find that out first, it'll tell you whether it's running at 16 or 8 ohms

but yes the swap will be fine, as long as you match the ohms

Re: Replacing Amp Speakers

Check out the Eminence Red Fangs. Great bang for the buck and they'd be perfect in that amp.

Re: Replacing Amp Speakers

what type of tone do you want? ya play metal or blues? you really should match the impedance of the stock speakers and there are plenty of good stuff out there

2 16 ohm speakers can be wired to 8 or 32 ohms, not 16. That said, the total load is likely 8 ohms. As said, match the impedance of the existing speakers. Failing to do so results in nasty tone and a risk of blowing the speakers or the amp's output transformer.

Re: Replacing Amp Speakers

I play heavy stuff. I play a guitar with seymour duncan jazz and custom. i still would like cleans though. from what thames said, i think the vintage 30 would be for me. but i would also like to check out the eminence red fangs. any more other suggestions?
