Replacing ceramic magnets in DD set with A2/A5

Re: Replacing ceramic magnets in DD set with A2/A5

There's NO mystery.

This rumor was started by a comment of a user, then changed to a fact by faulty parroting of others.

They're different, they've always been and they always will.

Then show me a post either way from an official source stating this. Thats what ive kept asking for and everyone keeps saying "They are different cause I say so I heard it from XXXXXXX!" but no official sources are presented. This is a mystery until an official source says so and if you ask me I think its better as a mystery as SD has no obligation to tell us either way.

You do the research.....we already know and are happy in our cocoon of knowledge.

And the moon must be in its 'Edgecrusher acting oddly' phase - you've been a right pain in the $ss just recently.

Re: Replacing ceramic magnets in DD set with A2/A5

If I may, I think that a better suited magnet combination is A3 for the neck; UOA5 for the bridge.

This would bring the set into "Vintage-y" territory and then some.

HTH,

Pardon my ignorance, but what kind of Alnico5 is a UOA5? I'm intrigued.

With all respect dude, when I'm standing in front of MJ and ask her, she has heard it so many times that she was answering the question before I was finished asking it. And I think most everyone here that the only authority higher than her is Seymour.

The last thread that the subject was mentioned I even pulled up your quote containing the conversation you had with MJ. Sorry Edgecrusher, but there is no mystery or hear-say anymore to the story. Either you missed out on the last incident where the quote was brought up, or you flat out ignored it.

Re: Replacing ceramic magnets in DD set with A2/A5

Thank you, dotsdad! Does the UOA5 have a different personality than regular A5?

The UOA5 falls between the A5 and the A2. Sorta the best qualities of both.

He goes thru phases. Sometimes he's totally annoying, and other times, he's slightly less annoying. ;)

This is cool and all but its still hearsay as no one else was there to verify it. If I heard it from her I would feel the same as you but I didnt can you understand my position here?

For all the people saying do the research ive looked and ive found nothing beyond Franks and Evans non-committal answers.

Yeah, he's in the "totally annoying" phase right now, but he won't ever be as annoying "somebody-mercy-kill-me-now-please" user "staybobo". ;)

No one from the forum was there to hear it. James, also with SD, was also there. It might appear that the position is one of forgoing the goodwill of the forum and suggesting that I am lying. Now.....you wouldn't be doing that.....would you?

In the end, it seems as if you are digging in your heels to make a mountain out of a mole hill over something on the rather insignificant side of what's important to hardly anyone other than yourself. If it was really that big of a deal to confirm, you could easily contact SD directly. So please consider getting the burr out of your saddle so that you may save yourself the hassle of the headache you are only giving yourself. So have a heart...you're taking Kojak away from his EU magnet-selling empire.

Re: Replacing ceramic magnets in DD set with A2/A5

We've gotten a little side-tracked from the OP.

I certainly understand Edgecrusher's point of view and his Missouri-"Show me" attitude, but just because it hasn't been absolutely proven to him does not mean that the proof does not exist...it's just that he hasn't seen it himself. Perhaps the answer to this situation should be for Edgecrusher to phone MJ and get the answer directly. It's the only way he will accept the fact. I am perfectly content with trusting darthphineas's word on this and Frank and Evan's (allbeit non-committal) responses.

Now back to the subject...

The Distortion is an excellent pup that works well with many different magnets (like the Custom). I've personally tried the bridge Dist. with the ceramic, A8, UOA5, A5, and A2 (I probably even tried A4 but I don't remember specifically). They all sounded great, except for the ceramic (lol). The A8 kept the main character, agression, and bite, but smoothed the mids and took away the brittle aspect of the high end. From what the OP says he wants, I would suggest either the A2 or the UOA5 (my personal fav mag in the Dist is the A2). Either of these will give him the "rounder tone" he is after and will also "tame the beasties a bit", with the A2 meeting that criteria with the greatest amount of success. The A5 and A8 don't really "tame the beasties" much, but do warm up the sound a bit.

For the neck I would think that an A4 or UOA5 would fit-the-bill better than an A5.

Thank you, GuitarDoc. Right now my only source for magnets is Stew-Mac, and they only have A2 and A5. If I kept the double-size spacers in the neck pickup but used a standard A5 and filled the remaining space with something non-magnetic(think air-coil), would that have a similar effect to using a UOA5? Not trying to be difficult here, my resources and funds are very limited, and my knowlege of pickup design is very basic so that all adds up to me being a right pain in the arse, and I'm sorry. I really appreciate all the suggestions that have been given-even with the de-railing, which was rather entertaining in its own right. Anyway, thanks.

Well, he's certainly never done that before.
