Replacing my Boss DS-2?

My DS-2 is what I use for harder distortion. Not Metal type distortion, but Nirvana and Pearl Jam type rhythm sounds. i like it, but the pedal is dying on me. I want to try something different. what distortion pedals are flavored similarly, or what do you just generally recommend? i've been thinking of a RAT...

Rats are good - especially if they have the 2 or 3 way mod that gives you different overdrive tones. They also go great if you run a ts in front. The harmonic overtones in the rat is what makes it sound better than a boss ds type pedal imo. The first harmonic is very strong so you get a really rich sound.

If you've been thinking of a RAT, you really should check out the Biyang Mouse!!
I know I have been recommending these Biyang pedals before, but a lot of their models are REALLY worth it!
Their Mouse is of course a RAT clone, comes with true bypass, and has the three-way switch mod that Gibson175 is talking about. If you are after a good RAT, I would not hesitate and invest a little money (the Biyangs can be bought cheap and offer great quality!) in the Biyang Mouse.

If you are open to building your own pedals DIY-style, then the General Guitar Gadgets BSIAB2 (Brown Sound in a Box version 2) is a real neat pedal to try out, it's JFET based and really has it's own charms! They also have a RAT clone out, but I'd just stick to the Biyang Mouse there (since it is so good and cheap).

Rat pedals are great, I love mine but these days you have to spend some good coin to get a good one.

The Distortion + and Distortion III are night and day pedals IMO.

The question is what kind of sound are you looking for...I mean anything could replace a DS-2...it just depends on what you want.

wow my super overdrive is a yummy pedal. i did away with the DS-2 and am running just the sd 1. i still need a harder edge pedal though, ill look at the ones suggested.

for many years since the mid 80's anywyas i've used a few DS1's and a DS2 myself... of late i've been using the VOX Satchuator pedal which is a basic DS1 sound of course with some nice additions... it is very cool to use in front of my Peavey C30 C50 and my JCM 800 2204....

what i love about that VOX pedal is it's MORE botton that turns your gain to a pre set of full gain.... with my C30 and C50 i like to set the Satch with a mild distortion for goosing the dirt channels of those amps... yet hit the more botton when i switch over to the clean channel... with that one pedal and a small combo like the C30 the tone options are quite wide yet still on a low budget.... plus i have other pedals too add to the mix as well... killer compact set up...

i've been wanting to try the Satch with the New imported VOX AC 15 amp

but one of the better pedals out there for fans of DS1 style distortions is the Diamond Fireburst... i think it's called the Fireburst... i'll have to look it up...

yup Diamond Pedal's Fireburst.... i tried that thing into the clean channel of a Traynor combo and it turned it into a fire breathing stack sound with a good low end to it

i want their Compressor and Phaser as well

Mains powering and more controls.

FWIIW, Glenn, I have an original (battery power only) MXR Distortion Plus from before you were born.
