Replacing Pickup Magnets

I hear alot of you mentioning replacing pickups in magnets. I have a few questions about the topic.

1) Where is this magnet located in the pickup?

2) Where do you buy magnets like these?

3) Are there specific magnets made for pickups? Or do you just buy a generic magnet?

4) How does one carry out this process?

Re: Replacing Pickup Magnets

Cool John, I never knew that was your tutorial. It actually was one of the many fine references I consulted when doing my magnet swap as well as my hybrid I made. Thanks for a well thought out tutorial!

Re: Replacing Pickup Magnets

Thanks for the guide! I happened to come across that last night while searching for more info pertaining to the topic.

But does someone know what size magnet you need, and where to purchase them?

www.ampge.com seems to be the "usual culprit" for buying magnets ;)

Re: Replacing Pickup Magnets

Last I knew, Allstar was Seymour's supplier (he does his own charging and de-gaussing tho). They also supply Fender with magnets, as well as a number of independent winders. I've bought magnets from them, and their service has always been very good. The minimum order used to be $25.00. I believe it's higher now. Maybe you could find a few folks around here to go in on an order together. Lindy Fralin and Torres Engineering will sell you individual magnets, but they charge a lot (too much, IMO). It's nice to have a collection of different mags on hand, as they all have a different effect on how a pup sounds.

Re: Replacing Pickup Magnets

Allstarmagnetics quoted me a minimum of $75. That covers 12 magnets though so it's a great deal!

Re: Replacing Pickup Magnets

just a quick point to make ... in traditional single coil pups, the magnets are the pole pieces ... in traditional double coil pup, the magnet is a bar that sits under the coils

$75.00 should get you a LOT more than 12 magnets. What are you buying??

A lot more magnets than that if you don't want Alnico 8's -- Alnico 2/3/4/5 are $2.00 a piece!

Re: Replacing Pickup Magnets

Hmmmm he charged me $6.00 a piece... I didn't even question it, as I thought that was a flat rate for any magnet. I may have to give a call back. I didn't get all Alnico 8's either, I think I got 4 Alnico 8, 3 AL3, 3AL4, and 2 Ceramic 8's. After $8.00 shipping it was like $83.

EDIT: I received 6 Alnico 8, 2 AL3, 2 AL4, and 2 Ceramic8.

Zhanliqin, does Allstarmagnetics charge only $2.00 a piece for the Alnico 2 through 5? I may be needing a refund or some extra magnets sent to me.
