Replacing the one that got away

20 years ago,the assistant from my guitar shop (Nobby) and I,decided to go to the States to take in the NHRA Winternationals and have a 2 week guitar safari. Just before we left,I thought I might need some more funds,so in a moment of utter stupidity,I sold my 75 Ibanez Destroyer to one of Nobby's mates for $600. It was my favourite guitar,I loved the neck,I loved the pickups,I loved everything about it. I thought when I got to the States, these thing would be dime a dozen,so I'd pick up a couple dirt cheap and replace the one I had sold.
WRONG!!!!!!!
I only found one in 2 weeks of combing Californian guitar shops and the dude wanted $1100 for it!!!!
We bought a crap load of guitars and parts on that trip, but the replacement Destroyer alluded me.
Over the last 20 years,I have brought and sold about 10 Explorers and Ex style guitars looking for THE ONE.
But nothing has come close to the Iby.
So,last week,I'm doing the rounds of the local Crime Converters and spotted this Tokai.
I picked it up,and BINGO! This is THE ONE!!!

I think it's a 2010 model EX55 in natural finish.
The body is either basswood or alder, depending on which website you believe. Although the one has some really nice figure to it and looks more like Ash. Who knows?.....

It has more in common with the Destroyer than any of the other Explorers I've tried.
The neck is almost identical in feel and profile. The weight and balance are perfect.
The pickups...well....they pretty much suck!
I'll probably drop in a 59/JB combo. But theres a heap of other nice things in the shed that might get tried out too.
Those black speed knobs have to go too.
Anyway,I'll clean her up,do the pickup swap and that'll be it.
The 20 year search is over.
This one's a keeper!!

Cheers,PJ

Glad you finally found "the" one,'Grats!!!

Re: Replacing the one that got away

cool! congrats!! have a few wish I hadn'ts...Perhaps one day...............

Re: Replacing the one that got away

I've done it a few times.

I stupidly traded a LP 2 pickup Black Beauty away for a 54 CS Strat. I re-aquired a 3 pickup Black Beauty.

I got rid of a Marshall 100W Jubilee, only to later get a 50W one.

I sold 24 fret PRS Customs to get 22 fret McCartys.

Over time, I weeded out average Les Pauls for killer flametops.

I did the same with some guns to get top end ones.

Glad it was still there the following day! You must have sweated that night waiting for the morning.
What knobs are you going with? And will you have uncovered PUPs?

Yeah mate,it was a looong 24 hours.
What happened was....I talked the price down from $700 to $450 and wanted to get out the bloody door before they changed their mind.
The girl at the counter ran both my cards and they were declined. Aw crap!! So,after a bit of negotiation, they agreed to hold it for 24 hours. I managed to get back just in time with cash. Problem solved.
Turns out the girl was screwing up on the card machine.....

Knobs will be gold "Tophats",tempted to put in pickups with gold covers, but there are a lot of nice black, cream and zebras out in the shed looking for an axe! Found a set of Rio Grande (BBQ/Genuine Texas) out there today......

Cheers,PJ

Re: Replacing the one that got away

Andy, you could swap out pickups every week for six months and you'd still find
More in your stash you forgot about!

Will,I dug out a Gibson 57 Classic with gold cover for the neck and an old JB with gold pole pieces for the bridge.
Hope to get it done this weekend.
Changed to gold tophat knobs. I think it works.

Re: Replacing the one that got away

Very cool! I wonder if the same factory made Ibanez-es and Tokais? Your original guitar and this one very well could have come down the same assembly line.
Did these ever come with black guardplates? I swear I saw a natural-finish Explorer copy with black hardware and black guard once...
