Reshaping headstock

Thinking about knocking off the point on the headstock of my Ibanez GIO.

Anybody have any tips or suggestions before I begin?

Re: Reshaping headstock

I've done it plenty of times. I literally just did it yesterday. Just take your time, go a little bit at a time, and don't get too crazy. You can use to a file or a sanding block if it's not a huge change. But personally I have only done it on necks I am refinishing because touching up the finish when you're done never looks right unless you really luck out.
*Just looked up Gios online. Taking off that point could look good. Just file or sand until it looks right to you. If you are careful you will only have to touch up the edge, and it's such a small area that just about any clear should be OK. Consider something you brush rather than spray.

I was considering just sawing off as close to the edge as I could then sand the rest to square it off, I hadn't even considered just filing, but that does make more sense.

A small hacksaw, a couple of files and two pieces of sandpaper later...

I think it's okay. At least now it fits inside a gig bag :)

Re: Reshaping headstock

Holy **** balls why would you do that :burnout:? The ibanez headstock is one of the sexiest things in the guitar world.

Lucky it's only a gio or a part of me would have died inside.

Re: Reshaping headstock

The joke is "so it will fit in my gig bag", but really I wanted a more permanent 'signature' to go with other mods I want to make, which was the main reason I bought the GIO.

I have my RG350DXL sitting nearby, which apart from taking out the ZPS, I'm not messing with. Mostly because it was my 'separation gift' to myself.

Re: Reshaping headstock

It actually turned out better than I thought it might. Next step is to just go for a full headless!

Re: Reshaping headstock

I like the new shape don't get me wrong i just thought the ibanez headstock was perfect as is. :yourock: i support hacking cheap guitars up for mad scientist experiments.

You should glue the neck on and make it a neckthough style heel. :biglaugh: It worked for me.

Re: Reshaping headstock

I also am surprised how well it turned out. Looks good like that for some odd reason.

Re: Reshaping headstock

I always thought the spearfishing Ibanez headstock was hideous, anyway. They have had much better alternative headstocks over the years.

Pointy is as pointy does.

I had an Ibanez Roadstar II years ago. It had quite a nice headstock.

I wouldn't mind getting another one some day.

Nice job, there. I like it.

I never thought much of them, either.

I'm not one for super pointy stuff. I think that the new one he made has a certain understated elegance to it.

The "Butterknife"!
Took me along time to appreciate mine. Always wanted a Strat or a Kramer Hockey stick shaped head stock on mine. Its my first guitar from '84.

It doesn't bother me anymore. Plus its attached to one of my favorite necks out of all my guitars.

You sure? We'd be happy to make some radical modding suggestions! haha
