A friend of mine had a band many years ago where he wanted to get a more Middle Eastern type of sound with regular rock players. He told the drummer no hihat and had him use a couple of woodblocks and samba bells instead. It worked really well for that project - simple trick that gave a neat ethnic flavor.
Nope. He used, what I think are called boobams, instead. Cool, tribal sounds.
