Resistors and Potentiometers

Re: Resistors and Potentiometers

Two pots are always wired in parallel, arent they?

The pickups are in parallel when you have the LP switch in the middle or a notch position on a Strat. That completely changes their electrical properties.

Re: Resistors and Potentiometers

i have never used resistors or caps, just pots of all different resistances.

i must say, 250k is the best for single coils. it just makes for that single coil sound.

for p90s, 500k is nicest.

for jazzmaster pickups, i have only tried 1M and it's fantastic. it makes for that trademark bright jazzmaster sound.

for humbuckers i use 500k or 1M (SD CS humbucker under jazzmaster). i love the brightness and clarity of the 1M. it seems like the lower the resistance pot that is used with a HB, the more "blanketed" or "muffled" it sounds.

i'm considering going with 1M pots for all my HBs. once you hear that clarity, it's just something else. even the increased definition from the wound strings is remarkable.

i also remove the tone pots. i don't dial tone down unless i use a wah pedal.

Re: Resistors and Potentiometers

A creative person could possibly make a test mule with clamps for wire connections and sockets for componentry on a strat pickguard and experiment with tones before they install them into a guitar.

Install a socket block on the front of a guitar and replace until you get the sound you like. For the cost of an mid quality LTD you can call up Rondo Music and have a Strat mule with a 25.5 and a mahogany 24.75 body guitar with all the nerd fixins added in to explore pickups.
