Results: Custom/Distortion hybrid

I posted this earlier today in another thread

So I'm doing this DD/custom hybrid next. I wanted to share my experience with the board on my findings. I just did a thread on the custom/jb hybrid with a thorough review here https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=244433

I put an A8 mag in the DD last night and have been playing around with it. The reason I did that was to see what the A8 mag did to the distiortion in comparison with the JB before I do the DD/custom hybrid. The JB seems hotter and more compressed to me. A little angrier and has got that upper mid sound that some are not crazy about.
The DD A8 did not have this honky sound at all. Actually was very smooth and has a little smoother and brighter upper frequency push to it. Bottom was still tight but the downside (to me) was that is wasnt as hot or full sounding as the JB8 and its frequency cut just a little different.

I actually liked the overall sound better of the DD but wanted some more fullness to it. I'm actually excited about pairing it with the custom coil to see if I can add some character to it. I'll post my reviews of it as soon as I make the hybrid. hopefully sometime this weekend

So I played around with the DD8 today for a bit then decided to make the hybrid. It's a custom/Distortion. Custom slug coil and DD screw coil. I chose is this way because I have played the custom 8 and loved it but wanted some more bite and a little more grind. My previous thread described the custom/jb hybrid pretty well and there was that jb signature upper mid thing going on and I thought the distortion would fix that.

I was right. The DD8 shredded pretty hard but it was not as full as I would like it. I added the custom coil to it and it really rocks man! The Custom added a little fullness to it in the low midrange and added some growl to it. The DD is all bite and scream. The custom coil balances it out a bit. You can really hear some interesting tone coming out of it with the mismatched coils

This time around the DD coil added something else to the table in this hybrid in comparison to the JB. It is aggressive but smooth. more presence than the C8 in the upper register. Not as angry as when paired with the JB but still heavy. Adds a nice cutting bite that is a little bit more polite than when paired with the JB but still a little compressed. The low end is tight (signature A8) and everything is crystal clear.

Really, the DD coil added everything to this hybrid that the JB did but it replaced that upper midrange "thing" with something more in the 17k range or so. its not quite as full but I think its more tolerable than with the JB.

Someone (forgive me I can't remember) in another thread described the JB8 as having a sound that you just wanted to shut off after a while. I agree with this. The DD coil does not have that to me. much more pleasant and smooth

this hybrid is unique as it is very very heavy metal :headbang::headbang:: but really cleans up nice and will do straight up rock really nice . The cleans are not as good as the standard C8 but better than the DD8

I am very happy with this hybrid. If you like the JB you will probably like the custom/jb better. But if your like me, and there is something just a little funny about the sound of the JB then adding the distortion coil to it really adds something nice.

Hope this helps someone

cheers

I really want to do a full shred (which is a custom wind) with an alt 8 (overwound DD) hybrid. The alt 8 will add a nice mismatch to the coils and is deeper/fuller than the DD. not sure if I'll use A8 or double ceramic for it yet.

Re: Results: Custom/Distortion hybrid

Idk about the hybrid, but I stuck a big ceramic in the alt 8 and it was really bright and tighter than a dolphins butt. Not much bass. It wasn't fizzy either. It was more of a glassy bright. Personally I would stick with a8 or a5
