Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

Alright here's the rig for now:

Guitar => modded Vox V847 wah => Boss SD1 => POD 2.0 with floorboard => effects return of Laney AOR 30 combo.

The problems are:
The combo is way too big for my room and way too loud (all tube 30W... friggin' humongous amp!)
I have no money so I NEED to sell my amp, but I can't get more than around 150 pounds for it.
I LOVE tube so much I'm convinced a 15W tube amp would be great for me.

So... I'm a bit lost as to what to do right now. I can't seem to be able to sell the amp as it's hard as **** for me to ship it (student and poor...)

It's a bit of a vague thread I know, but I ran out of options that my demented mind could come up with. So I'd take any advise, any hint, it can only help from here.
I do have some money on the side but I NEED to sell my big amp first... It's what I do after that's the problem.
So what rig for a hardcore bedroom player? :D

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

How about getting the buyer to pay first, also the shipping so you can afford to ship it. You could do that either on ebay or here on the forum.

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

Oh I will do, problem is, my options to do AFTER that. And most importantly, FINDING the buyer.
I'm basically just looking at what I could do with the money from everything. I could get maybe about 250 pounds out of everything I have saved up once the amp is sold.

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

Start by listing your amp here. Laney's are pretty popular on this site and there are a lot of european readers...

As far as what amp to buy....if you want a small tube amp for under $500(thats about 250 pounds, right?) there are many options. Blues Junior comes to mind...the Laney LC15R or VC15 are probably a good choice assuming you like Laney...Crate Palominos are pretty sweet 15 watters...Ampeg J12...there are a lot of options...I'm not sure a tube amp is really the right call for a POD based rig, but I'm not a modeler, so ya never know! :D

Good luck!

Mike

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

I can only find the Laney and the Fender around here, and the BJ (...) is too expensive. The LC15R is what I have in mind and I LOVE the little thing but I may end up not having enough in the end. Basically I'm just looking at other options for now.
Crate palominos don't exist here, and no one's ever heard of Ampeg.
And 500 dollars is more like 300 pounds, 350 if you take into account everythign being more expensive here :( I'd have so many more options were I in the US...
And my amp has been listed for sale for a about a week, no bite yet. Hence why I'm a bit desperate for now!

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

Never heard of Ampeg?!!??! Woah... :D I'm suprised you couldn't just trade your amp for the LC15. Isn't your amp worth more? Pro Junior might be your best bet...there aren't many 15 watt tube amps for under $300 if Crate, Carvin, Peavey, etc. aren't options...

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

Rewrite your patches and keep your amp. The coolest thing about modeling is that you can write patches that sound huge at bedroom volumes nd write patches for gigging volumes.

Hit that reset button and start spinning them knobs. :)

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

Mhmm The amp AND POD sound great guys. It's just that the amp is too damn big for my room and I'm looking for something smaller in size, but which would also allow me to amplify the POD well ;)

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

If you have the dough, buy a Hiwatt Custom 20. It's simply one of the best amps i've ever played; the clean channel goes from chimy and round to muscular and really thick. With a good OD pedal, you got yourself one hell of an amp!

But if you DON'T have the dough, buy one of those sweet little fenders ;)

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

Is it the physical size of the amp that bothers you, or is it that you want to cook the power section?

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

Mostly physical size. Cooking the poweramp... Well if that means OD the poweramp, then it's not a proper need, but eh sure it'd be nice.

The idea would be an all tube .5W power amp hehe... Zvex nano head! But all I know of are way too expensive :(

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

If your amp is a 1x12 combo, going to a smaller wattage tube amp will most likely not solve your issues. Heck, my SWR Strawberry Blonde acoustic combo (80w) is rougly the same size as my friend's”

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

Oh it would hehe... The AOR weighs about 25 to 30 kilos (no scales around here to measure it). And it's friggin' HUGE for a 112. The LC15R is three times smaller and it's a 110. Weighs A LOT less too. I'm just looking to see if there are any alternative I could consider for the same price basically.

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

I see. Consider asking around locally to see if any players are willing to trade the small Laney for your big one. :)

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

Yeah that's in the process... Now I just need to find players :laugh2: Thanks for the help.

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

One thing to keep in mind though: Going to a smaller cab and speaker will make you lose some bottom end. It might not matter much, but if you play a lot of metal and hard rock (like you), you might want to be aware of that.

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

I have a Traynor YCV 20 (15 watts) that has great tones at bedroom levels. It cost me around $350 USD

all tube of course

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

I agree with Benji about keeping your amp and spending more time with your modeler settings. Smaller tube amps rarely have FX loops, and even if they do, you'll lose some of the tone you're used to.

Since you're just using the Laney's power section, just keep your rig lower in volume, and work on getting the most out of your POD.

Most importantly, just work on your guitar playing, and don't get too obsessed with new gear ideas. I'll be honest, I have a lot of gear, but I only use the things I really need. I did a session Sunday in Malibu Beach and all I brought was my Vox modeling head, a strat, an acoustic, and 2 cords.
They didn't give a crap about my gear.....they wanted me to put down tracks that were in the pocket and be done in 3 hours.

Re: Rething my gear! (a lot of problems)

okay the solution to your problem is the atomic 1x12 or 2x12 tube amp for the pod...might be more than you are willing to spend but try to save up...
or sell your pedals and use the efx in the pod.
