Rethinking my PGn...

I've been considering trying something else besides my PG, I like the theory behind its sound but sometimes I long for that kind of wallowing(word?), howling sound that you hear on the killer queen and bohemian rhabsody solos, but without losing that subtle dirtiness. I like my PG but at times it sounds like the tone pot is rolled off when its on full, just a bit flat not as lively as I'd like. Any recomendations on a compromise? I want it to sound more lively and smooth but not so smooth that it loses character. I'm thinkin A2P or antiquity?

I think the PGn is one of the best neck humbucking pickups available. But if you want something with a little more highs (and more bass) consider the Jazz neck or 59N. The Antiquity and Seth are both killer but if you found the PGn to warm or dark I don't know that you'd find the Ant or Seth to be much brighter or livlier than the PGn. Sounds like you might like an alnico 5 neck bucker.

I too love the sound of Brian Mays solo on Killer queen. It is a bright pickup probabley at least 8 resinant peak and recorded with a fair amount of compression hence the bright thick tone. Have you tried running that PGn thru a compression peddle such as Robert Keeley? how bout the Seymour Duncan peddle? both really help to thicken up a bright tone to make it full sounding.-just a thought :beerchug:

Re: Rethinking my PGn...

I find alnico 2 pups to be closest to that Brian May sound (when you're using humbuckers anyway). Soo...was the PG too weak sounding, too bright, etc? Maybe an Alnico 2 Pro humbucker?

Re: Rethinking my PGn...

When I owned a Vox AC-30, I learned that the Vox with Celestion Blue speakers is a HUGE PERCENTAGE of Brian May's tone...just like EVH tone is mostly the Marshall Plexi amp.

I could get alot of that sweet, almost violin-like tone with my '54 Tele plugged into an overdrive pedal like my Tubescreamer or Boss DS-1 (set for a cleanish boost) into the Vox AC-30.

The pickups seem to be the least important part of the formula, as long as they are nice high quality single coils. In my '54 Tele I have Fralin Blues Specials. It was before I got my other two Teles with Antiquities and MJ wound Custom Shop Tapped Tele Hot pickups.
