hi, im thinking of retubing my 5150II, i dont know alot about tubes because ive never retubed my head. i know it has 4 6L6 power tubes and 6 12ax7 preamp tubes. what tubes whould u guys reccomend? I have heard great things about Ruby. Im looking for a fat warm metal tone. Also how do i replace them? do i just pull out the old ones and put the new ones in?
thanks!

Re: retubing my amp

sorta, for preamps you can just pull em out & put new ones in, but powers you gotta rebias

for a fat warm metal tone i'd go groove tube 12ax7c's in the preamp

for powers i'd go with ruby 6l6mstr's for a little top end extension & added articulation, but they're definately not fat & warm sounding

though i run em with electro harmonix pres in the bassman & have no problem getting a warm tone

Nah, Ruby tubes suck.....at least the ones I've heard.

Get JJ, Svetlana, or GT GE's

GT12AX7C's, Tungsol, Sovtek 12AX7LPS are my favorites for an amp like that.

www.revolutionguitar.com , Todd, is a friend of mine, and is a popular tube distributor who ships fast, packs extremely well, and is cheaper than his competition. He also stocks different brands of tubes, whereas some are just glorified JJ salesmen pretending that they're tube authorities. :blackeye:

It's unlikely that the preamp tubes need to be replaced. They typically last several times longer than power tubes.

Yep....Normally they only need replacing because they become microphonic..

I'm really loving these GT 12AX7M tubes!

Re: retubing my amp

the mstr's are kind of the exception to the "ruby's suck" rule

they're the only ruby's i've played that i liked, but i like them a lot, and reccomend them quite a bit

the guy who invented fire likes them too, and well, he's tried everything :)
