Rev Willy 7-38 strings on my Zappa SG

Strangest feeling ever. I don't quite know how to describe how strings this light feel. I am used to 9.5-44 on Fender or PRS scale guitars and 10-46 on Gibson scale instruments. I have a light touch and can barely control these little things. A player has to have a very light and accurate touch and even then these are hard to keep in control.

The sound is cool, that 70's Brian May and Jimmy Page sound or Frank Zappa's strange treble tone is really there in these teeny strings. The sound is quite tight and controlled but with a strong upper mid spike, not the treble that i was anticipating.

Not sure how I feel about this yet.

Playing with strings this light is not easy.

More power to you. I don't think that I could play strings that light. Though I bet that bends are really easy.

Not crazy about the strings but I want your guitar in the worst way.

He white headstock really ties the thing together. Never played one before and now they're out of production.

I've thought about getting a set, but first of all, I have neither a light nor accurate touch. Second of all I feel like I would over bend and break the string.

Lightest I'll go is a 9. I'm a hammer handed, meat fisted player so I don't play light enough to not mash strings out of tune. Best of luck to you on this new endeavor!!! I'll be praying for you. ;)

Edited to add: Are these Billy Gibbon's signature strings? I've heard he likes 'em pretty thin...

Wow, those are about half the size of the 56-11s I use. :D

Yeah. Thin enough that Dick Dale would recoil in horror.

The lightest I've tried was 9-42 strings and 10-46 / 10-52 are my common choices
I believe that plinky sounding guitars benefit from having lighter strings and higher action.

Re: Rev Willy 7-38 strings on my Zappa SG

The Zappa SG sounds pretty huge with 9.5 or 10 gauge strings. The 7's are fine from a tone standpoint and don't sound as tiny as many may expect but the feel is something I just can't get used to. I will leave them on because I am curious to see how long they last.
