Reverb, or NO Reverb?

Just wondering what you guys prefer - reverb, or not? Most of my amps have had reverb, but I don't tend to use it alot. I usually set the 'verb on the Fender Super-Amp at around 2 or 3. Many times I just switch it 'off'. Maybe because I'm playing Blues, and I like the drier tone, who knows. The reverb always seems to water down the resonance, and full tone of the amp. Years ago I loved to use effects, but as time went on I found myself going the guitar-and-amp route.......aside from an occasional Vox wah or OD pedal.

My preference may also stem from when I played through my Soldano HR50, and '78 Marshall SL100.

Your preference?

Mike

I would say 99% of the time it NO reverb...I found that when playing out it just muddies everything up...sometimes i will record with just a touch, but NEVER live and hardly ever any other time!

I'm obsessed with reverb. I'd probably melt or die without it! :)

Re: Reverb, or NO Reverb?

When I first bought my 77 Marshal Super Lead, I missed reverb. It was my first Marshall and my first tube amp and honestly, I hated it. I didn't know what all the big fuss about tube amps or Marshalls were all about. I was disappointed in the tone and wanted my solid state peavey back hehe.

As my playing got better and my ear for tone got better, I began to appreciate the amp and learned how to use the amp. I listened to old hendrix and clapton records and tried to imitate their tone as close as possible to see if my Marshall could actually pull the tone and that i wasn't just being lied to hehehe. I learned about power tube saturation vs preamp saturation and blah blah.

Now I am in love with my amp and the only other amp I would want is probably an Old 50 watt Marshall 4 input Plexi. I don't miss reverb anymore. I used to use reverb as a crutch for my playing and tone. Reverb can really warm up a stale tone and give the illusion of longer sustain. With the dry Marshall, all the tone is not masked and whatever sweetness and sustain you get out of the amp is from the fingers. Now I prefer a dry sound and might use reverb in the slight case that it is needed.

Thats why when I see younger kids (heh i'm still in my mid 20's myself) say that classic marshalls suck or that tube amps suck, I don't scold them like how older guitarists did to me when I was still high school. I know where they come from in their sentiments. They just really don't know any better.

I absolutely love reverb with the clean channel, I use it on my super reverb from levels as low as 2 to as much as 8. if i have alot of drive though, i dont like much or any reverb.

Re: Reverb, or NO Reverb?

Umm.. im not sure, i always used to have it, love it very high setting then the other guitarist in my band taught me that i didnt need it, so i turned it right down leaving only a little on!

Re: Reverb, or NO Reverb?

Little to none, reverb just aint my sound.

Re: Reverb, or NO Reverb?

I think most guys I hear who use reverb use to much reverb...but don't realize it. I use the reverb on my blackface Fenders set to maybe 2 or a touch more. Just enough that when I hit my strings and then choke them I can hear a little reverb splash afterwards, but not enough that you can really hear the reverb when I'm playing. Just a little for ambience...just enough that my tone doesn't sound to dry in a dead room. When I play through my non-reverb amps I don't really miss not having reverb. Lew

Re: Reverb, or NO Reverb?

yeah, i use it - subtly, as most guys have mentioned ...

i also like a touch of chorus too .. just enough to give me a bit of motion in the sound .. seems to accentuate the finger vibrato i use and the voivings of chords i choose

cheers

Re: Reverb, or NO Reverb?

i like it, probably because i have a really good reverb sound from my twin heh

Re: Reverb, or NO Reverb?

i use itte to no reverb. It's just not fitting for pure Black Metal an nearly all other stuff i play. But since i'm using a Line 6 Vetta II HD it sound pretty good in the rare cases i use it.

It's the best reverb you'll ever hear in any amp.

BTW most reverb equipped amps sound different than their no-reverb counterparts even with the reverb off. I've heard quite a few people say they like fender reverb amps better than no reverb ones, even though they don't use the reverb.

that's because in some circuits, like the Princeton Reverb, half of the reverb driver adds gain to the circuit
