could ya guys help me out with this effect? im talkin about the sound on hendrix's "Are you experienced" ......there are various other songs that use it also

i do know that it was a trick in the studio to make the reverse echo type of sound, but is there any effect boxes out there that accomplish this or get close to it?

please educate me my friends.....:D

Most dedicated delay units have a setting called 'Reverse' which will simulate that effect.

Mostly, back in the day, it was done by literally reversing the physical tape and playing it backwards ("backwards masking"). If you're doing it for recording only, you can easily do it digitally in Pro Tools or Sonar. If you want to replicate it live, I've seen the effect on Boss, Digitech, Eventide, and Lexicon Processors, basically going from $150 - $4000. Just read the list of effects and look for a "reverse" or "reverse gate" effect.

well ive got one of those Boss delays (DD- whatever....ha) and im 99% sure its not capable of that type of sound......

thanks for the info odyssey..........any more help guys?

The boss dd6, it'll set you back about 140 bucks or so.

nope, i have the early one....... DD3 i think it is

is there anything i could possibly do that could perhaps create that sound ;mod or any kind of "reverse box" or unit (im not too educated in this topic, so forgive any stupidness) that i could turn on and off to give this type of sound?

Danelectro makes a pedal called Back Talk delay. I never heard
one,But they claim it will do what your talking about. It retails
for a little over a $100:D

It's a studio effect, like twilight odessy says, they actually played wit hthe tape itself back then.

There is a Snarling Dogs pedal that simulates the backwards effect though - you rock the pedal, your volume swells up and then it adds a pick attack at the end. Never tried myself but IIRC have read some good reviews.

Also known as 'slow gear'...

... best example of it i heard in the track 'Blue Powder' by Steve Vai, just before the bass solo. I thought i was listenning to a violin.

My bad, I read it wrong. I have the same delay the dd3 and it has no reverse delay, however the dd6 does indeed have the reverse delay.

The slow gear is not made anymore of course, Via used his volume knob / volume pedal ... and the Eventide's reverse delays
Heaven is a so called setting that he has on a cut or two, there is a company that does make a rebuild of the slow gear (still doesn't sound quite the same) ... Guyatone, they make one, but i can't remember what they call it exactly ... that will pretty much give you the backwards envelope, the Boss DD-5 will give you a similar effect although not the same, and it will have the direct (normal) mixed in with it, I don't know if the DD-6 has a direct defeat on it or not. I'd try that guyatone pedal first, look up their site and listen to a sound clip of it.

There IS a stand-alone unit that will do what you want it to do; it's called the BOOMERANG, and you can find it in music catalogs like Musician's Friend. It will set you back about $400.

well, the boomerang is more of a looping device than a backwards echo. you can play something, record it and trigger it backwards later.
a slow gear only affects the front of the note, not the end, so the note's end still sound foward. you need a delay box that does reverse echos. Line6, Boss, and Danelectro make em.

True, but I was thinking that he already has a delay unit, and can plug the output of THAT into the Boomerang.

Is the boomerang a *real time* device though would be my question ...

I tried this pedal but it wasn't my cup of tea when using it with a tube amp. I don't know if it would be any different with my solid state amp, but I already have several echo effects built into that amp, so a pedal's not needed there.
If you're interested in the "Back Talk" pedal, I'd be willing to sell the one I have that was bought new for cheap. I used it only a few times. Send me a message if interested.

The sound you are hearing from Jimis amps is the Voice of "GOD".
It cannot be reproduced by Mere mortals!

There's a slow gear type effect on my Line6 PODxt, but even at the slowest setting it's too fast!
