Reverse wound Reverse polarity

So if you have the center pickup of a strat reverse wound and reverse polarity
its hum canceling

If its just reverse wound does it do nothing?
if its just reverse polarity does that do anything?


do you have to do both ?
 
Yes you have to have both. Without both, you get no hum cancelling.

With 1, it'll be out of phase.

Pretty sure that is correct.
 
A great article, and a great chart that I have to refer to once in awhile. It gets confusing when you add different companies' pickups, or when you are not sure how a pickup is wired (like it isn't behaving like you think).
 
Yes, it has to be both to hum cancel. If it's just one it'll be out of phase, and neither is in phase but not hum cancelling. I post this pic about once a year.


That chart is wrong. Electrically out of phase and magnetically in phase will also be noiseless.
 
Yes, electrically out of phase and magnetically in phase will also be noiseless: that's the case with the OOP position between neck and mid pickups in Brian May's "Red Special".

As implied by Christopher, what counts is the direction of the winding: any hum cancelling air coil will become a noise generator once flipped upside down...

Adding reverse polarity to reverse winding in a pickup is just a way to avoid it to sound OOP when in parallel or in series with another transducer, while keeping the hum cancelling capability of the assembly.

so if I remove the ceramic bar magnets from under the pickups in my Squire strat
the center pickup is already reverse wound

and if I replace those ceramic bar magnets with small button size neo magnets
on the center pickup and only on the center pickup

I would need to orient those small button size neo magnets opposite of how I install the ones on the neck and bridge pickups

Some of the text is also incorrect. Paragraph #5 states; "Humbuckers all operate on this principle. The two coils have opposite wind and opposite polarity."

Almost all humbuckers have both coils wound the same direction, then connected internally reverse polarity. There are very few exceptions. (Strat singles are one.) Reverse wind, reverse polarity, or reverse magnet polarity all flip phase. (Polarity, actually.) Do any even number and your in phase. Any odd number, and your "out" again.

P.S. Where's the "chart" that is being mentioned? I don't see it.
 
I realize that my wording of non anglophone was not optimal in the previous answer...

I should have evoked the "direction of the windingS" (plural) or rather the simultaneous and opposite directionS of electrical impulsions in both coilS. What I was trying to share is probably explained (or at least pictured) more efficiently there:
