Review: Electro Voice EVM 12 S Speaker

So got this thing out of curiosity. Made early nineties i think and recently reconed.
It replace the Vintage 30 in my Engl Sovereign 100 1x12 openback combo.

Features: justa speaker,no features, but this thing is like double the weight of a V30 and looks bombproof with all that cold-rolled steel. 200W at 8 Ohms.

Reliability: Considering it survived for at least 15 years if figure it's as bulletproof as it looks

Value: considering the price i payed it's a killer deal

Customer support: no Idea

Sound: First let me say that this thing is exremely loud compared to a V30 just for the record. This speaker is cristal clear in all frequencies and there's no breakup to be found at any volume. A bit hi-fi could be a good description of the sound but hifi in a more tight, clear and sparkly way.
I'll go on comparing the different frequencies to the V30.

Bass: Not as much bass as a EVM 12 L but still more than a V30. More bass but also miles tighter, punchier and clearer. Palm mutes really punch you in the face with this speaker. A bit like a really tight kickdrum. great for metal but also cool for clear but fast jazz soloing.

Mids: Maybe a bit less mids than in the V30 but no annoying upper mid honk. Also very clear and balanced with good cut and midrange scream. Also great for metal but also adds a nice cut and clarity for clean playing.

Treble: Lots of it(maybe since the cone is new), but in a good way without fuzzing out like the V30. Clear, sparkly and articulate.

This speaker has hughe frequency-range without being mushy in any of them. Everything stays clear across the whole spectrum but never sterile or processed sounding.
I'd say this speaker won't work with amps that really on speaker breakup or speaker-coloration for their tone(like old marshalls), but when using an amp that gets it's tone from the pre/power amp and has a responsive EQ you're in total command of everything and totally can shape the tone to your liking without having to dial something unwanted out or something extra in because the speaker lacks it.

Overall it's the best speaker i've ever used.

Re: Review: Electro Voice EVM 12 S Speaker

Great review. It will take some time until the speaker sets in and will sound even better (?)

What do your EQ settings look like? I was a mids freak but I realized today that I have to run the mids around 10 o'clock only and the bass also to get a balanced sound withought "brizzle". Presence around zero. Seems, that the Engl Screamer has some serious mids going on...but the V30 is a mid monster, I guess.

Any chances you could record something? A/B comparison if you had some recordings with the old speaker?

Re: Review: Electro Voice EVM 12 S Speaker

EQ: Bass about 12-1 o'clock, Mids at 11 o'clock, Treble 2 o'clock, presence at about 10 o'clock.
The Sovereign is a lot like the screamer and has lots of mids. I need to fiddle with the settings a little since the nwe speaker is quite different but i guess that's about what it will be in the future. But i boost the amp with a modded DS-1 so i need less mids but a little more bass.

no clips of the V30 Sovereing, sorry so i can't give you an A/B

Re: Review: Electro Voice EVM 12 S Speaker

Cool review.

I really dig my 12L with every amp I've played it. I don't know how the 12S would do, but the L makes for an awesome acoustic guitar speaker as well, even without a High frequency driver.

I currently have my EVM paired with a V30 in a Marshall JCM C212 cab, played predominantly with a BF Fender Bassman.

Crushing clarity is the best way I can describe it.
