Review: My 2017 Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro.

As you might know, I bought my very first Les Paul just a week ago. I'd had the intention in the past, but every LP I tried felt to me like trying to play an elephant.
But things change and suddenly I started feeling comfortable with them. So now I've got one and I want to share my impressions with you. :D

THE GOOD:

Tone tone tone! Except for some specific details (I'll get into them) this thing sounds glorious. Strung with Dunlop 10-46 and it punches like no other guitar I've had before.
The pickups are definitely medium to low output and it doesn't need to be any hotter. It's just right for me as it is.
Stability - It's a damn solid guitar. It has the most stable neck of any guitar I have, it rarely goes out of tune and it intonates well.
Playability - It wasn't hard to get an even action across the fretboard and make it play like butter. I like my action somewhere between low and medium and I got it instantly.
It's not the easiest guitar to play in the upper registry, but I'm not trying to be John Petrucci, so I can deal with it.
Looks - Easily my best looking guitar and it's got a ton of compliments, even from friends who don't play music at all!
Bridge pickup - It sounds fantastic. It's a Probucker 3; uneven wound coils, slightly overwound and has an A2 magnet. Sounds like it for sure. Crunchy but sweet at the same time. And split it's just terrific. I see no reason to change it.

THE BAD:

Frets and nut - I wasn't expecting a perfect guitar from factory, but intonation isn't all that good in all spots due to slightly uneven frets. I'll have them crowned in a couple of months but I can live with it.
Also the nut wasn't cut too well and a bit too high, but a tech fixed that quickly and now it has no friction whatsoever, even though it's the stock plastic nut which was adjusted, not replaced. Excellent.
Intonation can be a problem - I had to replace the A string with a .42, because the stock .36 wouldn't intonate. Flat even with the saddle all the way to the pickups. So this particular guitar doesn't like "normal" strings.

THE "THIS IS NOT BAD BUT I STILL DIDN'T LIKE SO IT HAS TO BE MENTIONED" SECTION:

Neck pickup
- I've tried all sorts of polepiece and height adjustments but this Probucker 2 pickup is so fat and thick that I can't get it to sparkle and cut even a modest bit in humbucker mode.

You'll see in one of the pictures below just how low I have it set, and that way it gives a pinch more zing, but it's not enough for me.

Yeah, leads sound fluid as **** and huuuuge but there's no way to balance that tone with the bridge pickup. It's just too woofy. It needs a bit more snarl for sure and it's very likely that I'll replace it with something with a bit more spank.
Split it's great though.

CONCLUSION:

Easily the best guitar I've ever owned. I've been playing for almost 20 years and I couldn't have given myself a better present at this point.
I've been playing songs from Metallica's Load, Black Country Communion, King's X, Mastodon and Genesis on this thing and it's just the right sound and feel for so many things.
I'll happily buy another one of these if I get the chance!

P.S: Anyone has a chrome covered Pearly Gates neck for sale? :D

That's so cool, man! I'm glad you found something you like so much.

These are really the best "bang for the buck" Les Paul guitars out there these days...well made, nice pickups and downright gorgeous!

Congrats again!

I'd try a higher pot value on the neck pickup first. If it's 300k, go to 500k and see if that helps.

Congrats on the purchase! I love me some Cherryburst!

Thanks man!

In the meantime I went for it and really cranked the polepieces in the neck pup, while keeping it just a hint over the pickup ring.
They sit around 2-3 mm. tall and the tone is noticeably snappier now.
I was a bit too conservative at first with polepiece adjustment, but I got them right now and I think I'll keep this pickup now. :)

Nice guitar, strange that you can't intonate the a string properly i think.

Re: Review: My 2017 Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro.

Did the .042 intonate? Could have been a problem with the winding. DR Pure Blues used to be my go to strings but I began running into strings that wouldn't intonate. Either the D or A.

It could have been a faulty .36 on the Ernie Balls I first put, but I didn't have a direct replacement so I went with a spare Dunlop .42 I had around which intonated right away.

So I don't know. I'll go with 10-52 on this guitar anyway next time, so no biggie.

Oh, I thought it was the stock .036 that came on the guitar that wouldn't intonate. At any rate, it's possible that the new EB was "bad".

Pearly Gates neck. Just sayin'

Re: Review: My 2017 Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro.

I'd love to, but nah. I managed to make the neck tone pop out a bit via tweaking,
and I'm not gonna shell out the equivalent of $200 for a pickup (cost of a chrome covered Pearly Gates neck here)

oh yeah....Chilean ruble conversion rate or whatever....

By the way - great objective review.

Nice top. Stick an A4 in the neck pup. Preferably polished.

That is a really nice Epi- and I've played many Epis that played better than many Gibsons, so be happy!

Re: Review: My 2017 Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro.

I have a Epiphone black beauty, 3-pickups and luxurious. It came stock with 57's and sound muddy except the bridge pup. So I replaced all of them. Probuckers at neck and a bridge probucker in the middle, then a probucker ceramic at the bridge. Also went with a bone nut I worked myself. The results are perfect! I got sparkle and chime though EVERY pickup (yep, even the neck). I was amazed how well it worked out. Middle? It sounds great and full (not to be thin, tinny) and bridge kicks butt without heavy metal distortion tilt but it can go there. I believe it the bone nut made the difference big time. After 35 years I got "my guitar "

Re: Review: My 2017 Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro.

If that pic is with the neck pickup 'low', then I shudder to think about where it must have been when it was 'high'.

I never have neck pickups as high as that pic. The are generally level with the side of the pickup ring if they are weak, or lower. My p90 guitars are with the neck pickup level with the body mostly.

Re: Review: My 2017 Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro.

I am also happy you mentioned Genesis.

Re: Review: My 2017 Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro.

OP, I actually have a chrome (NOT nickel) covered Pearly Gates neck pickup that I'm not using for anything.

I would be willing to sell it and ship it to Chile for a reasonable price (say, normal used Pearly Gates price). PM me if you're interested :D

Haha! The high strings side was a bit too high, right? Actually the strings were a bit high as well, so it wasn't as bad as it looks. But still. :)
I actually don't have my other humbucker guitars set too differently from that picture and they sound good, but this specific guitar needs way more distance to gain clarity and now it's behaving very well.
My other guitars are much brighter instruments with brighter pickups.

I am also happy you mentioned Genesis.

Good to know!
I love Hackett's parts in the early Genesis albums and I'll play them from time to time.
