Review Of My New Gibson RD Reissue Silverburst

Freakin Awesome man!!!

Upon opening up the guitar and case and all, I was like...wow, cool man, just looking at it. The case is perfectly form fitting and hugs the guitar like a mother would to her newborn. I then proceeded to pick it up out of the case. The guitar weighs a freakin ton. Most of my Les Pauls weigh in right at around 9 pounds or so. I'm gonna have to say it's at least 10-10 1/2 pounds. It's a beast. The weight doesn't bother me one bit. I looked it over and the finish is absolutely perfect. I cannot find one single flaw in it. I then proceeded to tune it up. I stretched the heck out of the strings and then retuned it again. I played it without plugging it in. I bent the heck out of notes and it didn't go out of tune. The neck is ssomewhat fat, but not super duper old school fat. I really like the way it plays. It kinda reminds me of one of my Les Paul Premium Plus's. The neck seems to be somewhere between a 50's and a 60's neck. I'd say this leans a little more towards the size of a fat 50's neck, and I'm so used to the slim 60's feel. Very comfortable to play. I hit every single note on the guitar to see if there was any buzzing or anything. There was absolutely no buzzing. Maybe just a tiny tiny hint in a couple of places on the board. I love low action, and whoever set this one up must have known it was coming to me...lol. Actually, it was a tad low for my taste, and that's a real rarity. Well, I held it up like a shotgun and checked out the neck relief. It had just a tad too straight for me. I barely relieved it and it was perfect. The intonation was still perfect as well. I figured I'd then plug it into my Marshall JVM410H and give it a go. Before I did that I went ahead and threw some Dunlop Straplocks on it. That took about a minute and a half tops to do. The guitar balances perfectly. I really didn't think it would, but it does. Anyways, what a metal beast this thing is. I'm pretty much used to playing one of my lower output pickup loaded guitars through the amp. This thing freakin screamed man!! It's been a long time since I've played anything with Dirty Finger pickups in it. I remember years ago how heavy they were, but blah blah blah... Man alive!! these pickups are hot!! It's pretty cool actually. I'm used to playin my JVM on the OD 1 yellow/red mode. This guitar was about too hot for that. I backed down to the green mode and down to the red channel on the crunch channel and it was amazing. The leads just sing man with those high output Dirty Fingers. The rhythms aren't quite as defined/clear as I'd like, but I knew what I was getting into when I bought the guitar. However, they are still rather tight man. I wasn't too sure if this guitar was a 24 3/4 scale or a 25 1/2 when I bought it. I had read different descriptions. I'm still not 100% sure, but it sure does feel and play like a 25 1/2 scale. It's a great guitar.

I know alot of folks like to gripe about Gibson and that's cool I reckon. All I gotta say is...Either I always get lucky, I'm not picky, or alot of you are alot of whiney little biches. Man, For $900, I feel like I got a steal!!

Here's some crappy cell phone pics I took. I took a few more, but for some reason they haven't come through to my email yet.

If you have any questions, just ask me. I'm sure I forgot to mention a few things.

Great review and great guitar! That is a real beauty, play it like it deserves! I have to admit, silverburst ain't really my thing, but it is on that guitar.

Oh yeah, I forgot. It has Grover tuners on it. They're awesome!!! I love those things. Like I said, I kinda rushed through the review with the buzz and all, but I'm sure I'll keep remembering things I love about it. As of now, my only complaint is that the action from the factory was just a tad too low for me, and I think that's a good thing to gripe about....well, not gripe, but you know man. This is a great freakin guitar man!!

As far as changes I might do to it... I'll take the ring selecter switch thing off (I do that to all my Gibsons, it's just a personal thing) and maybe throw some nickel/chrome covers on the pickups. that's all I can forsee really.

I would like to have one of the silver V's to go along with my silver Marshall.

Re: Review Of My New Gibson RD Reissue Silverburst

Oh yeah....just remembered....This guitar is soooooooooo comfortable to sit down and play as well. It just sat perfectly on my right thigh no matter if I was kicking back on the couch or sittin up on it.

Re: Review Of My New Gibson RD Reissue Silverburst

How about upper fret access man? And body thickness?

Like a Les Paul??

It appears to me that the 22th fret is hard to reach! So no Rock You Like A Hurricane solo with that guitar for me!

Re: Review Of My New Gibson RD Reissue Silverburst

Dude, thats cool!! Ive never seen that shape before and I dig the silverbursts.
Yeah, Im a whiny B about Gibson's rising pricing, but a good one is a good one.. At 9 bills I wouldnt whine about that...
Rock on!!!

Re: Review Of My New Gibson RD Reissue Silverburst

Jolly, great guitar!!!! I can't believe that you actually put strap locks on it before plugging it into an amp - now that's dedication. :)

Thanks for the review. Can you confirm the scale length (since you said there are different descriptions out there)?

Congrats bro, I love a good Gibson.

I too, have been lucky and have received some very sweet Gibsons at good prices.

Re: Review Of My New Gibson RD Reissue Silverburst

I <3 the RD. Played one in guitar showcase and had major GAS. Such a cool, comfy guitar.

Re: Review Of My New Gibson RD Reissue Silverburst

Scale length to me looks like a 24.75

Congrats on the new guitbox Jolly

Actually, the upper access is just a tad easier than a Les Paul. That ole thumb just runs up there and rests on that heel so easy.;):)

As far as the thickness, it seems like it might have somewhere between 1/8" or 1/4" or so shaved off of it's body. There's no maple anything whatsoever on this guitar. It's a good ole chunk of mahogany that rocks!! Iguess, I don't measure things.

Re: Review Of My New Gibson RD Reissue Silverburst

Thanks for posting that, Jolly! You know I came like, this close, to buying one but went with the PRS Mira instead. I'm taking three things from your report.

1.) That looks absolutely bad ass.

2.) It sounds like a really great guitar.

3.) I'm glad I didn't buy one, because I can't hack an 11 lb guitar on stage. At 6" 175 lbs I'm not a miniature person, but I ain't Magnus Magnusson either and that's just too hefty for lil' old me. :D

However, YOU sound thrilled with it and have every reason to be. Congrats!

If Gibson would only release a Silverburst Explorer, I'd be all over it. I'm seriously thinking about buying another one and sending it off for a refin.

Re: Review Of My New Gibson RD Reissue Silverburst

Looks sweet, wish it came in different colors. Hard to top a sick Gibson.
