Review on Jazz neck, Metalheads read this

Ok, before I start reviewing I just wanna apologise to some people who were expecting pics and reviews of my Jackson KE2, they'll be up shortly, my PC broke down and I had to borrow my brother in law's laptop to use the internet again. Everything's ok now though

Ok, the main downer I always found in reviews about this pick up was that very few people actually reviewed it under high gain. Here's where my review differs:
Played with: Jackson Custom Shop KE2, Poplar wings, Rock Maple neck-thru, Ebony fingerboard, neck position. Plugged into a Mesa Boogie DC-5 all tube with the gain on 5 and a Boss DS-1 with the gain on 6

The Jazz is amazing, but it is a love/hate pick up! It's incredibly articulate either clean or under high gain. It sounds better than the '59 IMO which I've tried in several mahogany guitars and never liked. The clean ups are really good, very bell like, if you pick a string harder than another you will immediately notice, because it also has an amazing response. The Demon in the neck sounds a bit more bassy but is equally good at least I think so. Flamenco players who want to nail the Al DiMeola sound this is your thing! I do some occasional clean sweep picking, and it sounds like a waterfall, little drops of notes gently hitting the stream :32:

Ok tough guys, high gain situation:
This pick up really shines when playing some Stoner or Grunge Rock, it isn't really a Speed Metal pick up. Power Chords are fat and suprisingly agressive. Best I can describe it a Dragon's Growl when I hit a drop D(-A-D) power chord. Compared to the JB bridge it's again more responsive, a lot fatter and more articulate. It sounds a little like a DiMarzio Breed in the neck. Palm muting is possible but only if you back off the gain and add more presence with your amp. Don't worry it doesn't sound muddy at all otherwise, just not chuggah-chuggah if you know what I mean.
Shredders looking for a great neck pick up with fat, responsive and over articulate leads get out and get this pick up right now if you want your dream sound! When I played some Speed Metal I decided to do some percussive trem picking followed by some sweep picking. The JB sounded great but I wanted more fat in my tone, so I tried switching to the Jazz, and hello here it was! Sounds a bit like Petrucci attack but with more fatness. If you're a sloppy sweeper it might not rock your world, but controlled players every note comes through!

I need to get a recording pre-amp for my PC (might take a while), but when I do I'll demonstrate everything in a clip. Hope this helps!

Oh and harmonics don't really shine through any better than let's say the Breed does, it just represents everything you play, nothing more. On scale from 1 to 10 I'd give it a 8.5, the Air Norton does my thing a little better.

Re: Review on Jazz neck, Metalheads read this

Would anyone actually use a neck pickup for speed-metal though...regardless if it was a jazz or not??

Re: Review on Jazz neck, Metalheads read this

What are you meaning when you say using a neck pickup to do speed metal?
are your reffering to make power chord and rhythm stuff in the neck?
or are you reffering to Speed metal Lead in the neck?
i´m a little Slooper sweeper in the neck... but i played one jazz and it wents well with my sweeps. eheheheh i liked it.
how´s it for Sweeped arpeggios and 2hands/Tapping techniques NeeraDJ?

Re: Review on Jazz neck, Metalheads read this

When saying Speed Metal I mean riffs, fast palm mutes with chord fat riffs flying around. Cacophony/Seven Witch-ish.

I don't do second hand tap-sweeping, because I never really got into that stuff so I'm not really good at it. It's amazing for sweep arpeggios though

ranalli, I just want to get a good sound from both pick ups, and my old Paf Pro did Speed Metal incredibly well so not using the neck pick up for heavy music, is like not using a guitar you own to me

Re: Review on Jazz neck, Metalheads read this

Hmm...I love my Jazz too, but I've never used a neck pickup ever for riffing. Too muffled and woofy and muddy sounding to me, and pinch harmonics are dead as all hell.

we need more posts of people, who know how to express tone with words, about pups under high gain situations!

Do you think I should do a review on the Full shred Neck under high gain?
I just bought two for my SGs, but I wasnt sure if I should give it a go.

Wow thanks Theodie and Davey, that's really nice of you guys! :)
Jimmy you really should, I love helping people on this board with stuff like this not only because I get equal treatment but because this is the most personal and friendliest forum I've ever posted on.

I'd do a review on the TB-4 JB, but I already did that a few months ago, hope to have some clips ready for you guys soon. There's an effects meeting here in Holland on Sunday, maybe someone will bring a camera and post the video on the website. If someone does I'll ask him for a minute of tape so I can demonstrate the Jazz's sound. We haven't found anyone yet though, so I don't feel comfortable with promising anything yet :blackeye:

HAILS JIMMY.
YES MAN, AND POST SOME SOUNDCLIPS of it in the neck SHREDDING Solos please.
that is a thing that i MUST hear.
but please, no delay, flanger, chorus, phaser, whammy, harmonizer etc. only distortion and a bit ofreverb... otherwise you will mask the tone. IMO.
Hails and thank´s

Jimmy!!!! We want to hear the Full Shred review!!! I admire you folks that can descibe the sound of pickups so well. I know I cant do it that well.

Re: Review on Jazz neck, Metalheads read this

Neeradj, you nailed the review perfectly. I fall into the sloppy sweep-pickers department. Even my sweeps sound somewhat okay with that pup, and that's saying alot. I love the Jazz, and am considering dropping the JB/Jazz combo into my LP since I love it in my Jackson. It's so multi-purpose. It has that fast cold water over smooth rocks sound that I love.

I use the neck pickup all the time and with distortion too, however, I've never heard of anyone using the neck pickup for speed metal rhythm parts or any chugga-chugga type stuff that's all I'm saying. Just seems like that's a weird comparison to make.

But good review though, pretty thorough.

I'm sure you sound great bro, don't be so negative :) . Thanks for the compliment, I'm so happy with this combo (and the guitar ofcourse) this is the first time since I somewhat learned how to play, I don't feel like I need another guitar. Another satisfied JB/Jazz costumer. Too bad though since I may not be trying any other Duncans for a while, that's the risk of being a completely satisfied customer :smack:

The EMG85 and DiMarzio Air Norton do that trick though, most people underestimate the neck position of a guitar, but a neck pick up can easilly take you there :newangel: with high gain. Those two pups are a mere example, but it's a coincidence they also clean up beautifully :32:
