Ok, before I start reviewing I just wanna apologise to some people who were expecting pics and reviews of my Jackson KE2, they'll be up shortly, my PC broke down and I had to borrow my brother in law's laptop to use the internet again. Everything's ok now though
Ok, the main downer I always found in reviews about this pick up was that very few people actually reviewed it under high gain. Here's where my review differs:
Played with: Jackson Custom Shop KE2, Poplar wings, Rock Maple neck-thru, Ebony fingerboard, neck position. Plugged into a Mesa Boogie DC-5 all tube with the gain on 5 and a Boss DS-1 with the gain on 6
The Jazz is amazing, but it is a love/hate pick up! It's incredibly articulate either clean or under high gain. It sounds better than the '59 IMO which I've tried in several mahogany guitars and never liked. The clean ups are really good, very bell like, if you pick a string harder than another you will immediately notice, because it also has an amazing response. The Demon in the neck sounds a bit more bassy but is equally good at least I think so. Flamenco players who want to nail the Al DiMeola sound this is your thing! I do some occasional clean sweep picking, and it sounds like a waterfall, little drops of notes gently hitting the stream :32:
Ok tough guys, high gain situation:
This pick up really shines when playing some Stoner or Grunge Rock, it isn't really a Speed Metal pick up. Power Chords are fat and suprisingly agressive. Best I can describe it a Dragon's Growl when I hit a drop D(-A-D) power chord. Compared to the JB bridge it's again more responsive, a lot fatter and more articulate. It sounds a little like a DiMarzio Breed in the neck. Palm muting is possible but only if you back off the gain and add more presence with your amp. Don't worry it doesn't sound muddy at all otherwise, just not chuggah-chuggah if you know what I mean.
Shredders looking for a great neck pick up with fat, responsive and over articulate leads get out and get this pick up right now if you want your dream sound! When I played some Speed Metal I decided to do some percussive trem picking followed by some sweep picking. The JB sounded great but I wanted more fat in my tone, so I tried switching to the Jazz, and hello here it was! Sounds a bit like Petrucci attack but with more fatness. If you're a sloppy sweeper it might not rock your world, but controlled players every note comes through!
I need to get a recording pre-amp for my PC (might take a while), but when I do I'll demonstrate everything in a clip. Hope this helps!
