Review/Pics of my Les Paul w/ NEW P'ups (Custom/PGn), Pots (Dual Coil Split), & Caps

I thought I'd try to further contribute to this forum by doing a review of my LP that I modded the electronics on last month. It has new P'ups (Custom/Pearly Gates neck), Pots (w/ dual coil split), and Caps. :D

Let's start of with a couple pictures of the new pup's and covers installed:

Now for the review:

PGn Split Coil: The cleans are out of this world. I personally consider it the best clean tone I've heard/played on a Les Paul to date. But I honestly don't see myself using the PGn split with gain. Not that it's bad. But I much prefer this p'up unsplit with gain.

PGn Unsplit: It produces some INCREDIBLE lead tones under high gain. And of course, arguably, it is THE mid gain crunch pick up for some Texas blues rock... dare I say, 'holy grail?' (not pure blues, but blues ROCK... with the obvious example of Mr. Gibbons).

Custom Split Coil: To be honest, I didn't like this setting for the most part. Granted, I was able to garner some cool sounds with a few effects pedals, but I don't see myself using this on a regular basis. In fact, I'm sure it'll be the rare occasion that I use it.

Custom Unsplit: Just the way a cold, freshly squeezed lemonade hits you on a hot summer day, this p'up will bite hard, but it'll feel great and taste amazing all the way down! For all of you forum members that keep saying, "it gives a tight low end," you weren't kidding! I really love the palm muting on this thing. It really brings out that tightness I hear so much about. It doesn't sound like an active EMG decimating your face with machine gun fire. And that's not to say that I don't like EMGs at all... just that it should be used a bit more sparingly rather than constantly (in my humble, amateur opinion, of course). I find the palm muting in the Custom to be relatively musical, at least compared to some of the other high output pickups out there. I can feel the tone embellish the staccotoed notes with clear precision. This p'up almost seems to me that it was made for a LP.

Dual Coil Split Wiring Harness (from MartinSixStringCustoms):
*Custom CTS 500K Tapered Tone Pots (Split), Custom CTS 500K Tapered Volume Pots, .022 Bridge Cap, .015 Neck Cap*
I was extremely ignorant to what changing these electronics could do for a guitar until now. The bump from 300K to 500K Volume pots alone made a HUGE difference. I can finally use a fine touch to the volume control, unlike the stock 300K Linear Vol Pots where 2/3 of the knob control was utterly useless. Between the new Pots and the Caps, my Les Paul's tone certainly "opened up."

I like the engraved neck chrome cover! But I'm still on the fence b/w the stock chrome covers with pole holes (is it bad that every time I read or think think 'pole holes,' I laugh up a storm? :33: lol) or these aftermarket ones.

OVERALL: I am VERY pleased with the outcome of the new electronics. I feel like I finally tapped into the guitar's potential. With the four coil settings, it seems like I unknowingly designated each one of them to a particular type of playing:
[1] Split PGn - Cleans
[2] Unsplit PGn - Solos (High Gain) & dirty blues tone (Mid Gain)
[3] Split Custom - Background ambiance/lead fills (effects Pedals, i.e., flanger)
[4] Unsplit Custom - Rhythm (HIGH GAIN), occasional leads that requires more treble (High Gain)
If you ask me, "Do you recommend this setup in a Les Paul?", I'd probably respond with, "This is the only combo of electronics that I'd promote in a Les Paul." LOL I'm definitely NOT saying that there aren't other phenomenal pickup combos out there. Just that for my palate, as far as Gibson Les Pauls are concerned, I believe (extra emphasis on "believe" lol) I've found my favorite p'up combo and electronic setup.

I think that covers it. lol Feel free to ask any questions or disagree with me if you'd like. :D

I've got a Pearly in the neck position of a superstrat type. I think it's one of the best neck pickups out there in any guitar! I think it's EQ'd just right to pick up the perfect harmonic content in the neck.

Also, your guitar looks awesome!

You have great taste! And it's apparent that you have immaculate tonal perception, as well! :beerchug: :headbang:

Glad to hear you like the pups and great looking Axe too. I use both the Custom and PGn in my superstrat as well but I swapped the mags in both and made them into a C8/PGn with UOA5.

Thank you! I have a Custom/'59 set in a Schecter C-1 Classic that I swapped mags in earlier this week. Made them a C8/'59n-A4. Works great in that guitar. Not so sure if I would do that in a Les Paul though.

Your Superstrat sounds awesome! You got a picture of it?

:notworthy That is a BEAUTIFUL guitar, bro. Well, done! Custom, Lil SD, and PGn-UOA5? She must sound like... well... a screamin demon! Very appropriate! I'm guessing you have a 5-way switch on that beauty. Which one is your favorite of the 5 positions?

Thanks and depends on what tone i'm going for at the moment but off the top of my head I usually go for the bridge, the neck or the neck/mid position. The demon isn't as loud as the two buckers but has its uses and it has a nice single coil like quality to it, very articulate and can handle any amount of gain and still maintain its clarity and definition. The C8 can really kick you in the azz when needed but sounds great clean too. The PGn I love for a vintage sweetness and when i'm doing lead work gives me a smooth, almost liquid like tone with the tone knob rolled back a bit but full up with the vol on 10 it roars, very big sounding. I am working on trying to get a Quater pounder single to put in the middle to replace the demon and see how that sounds. Really I wanted a strat that sounds like a LP if that makes sense lol.

That neck pickup looks way too badass. How'd you engrave that and what's that symbol?

Whoa, what's the story with that finish (on the LP)? Looks really unique!

That is awesome! I've heard that putting Duncan Alternative 8 on Strat-type guitars make them sound monstrous. I was initially looking into it for the Les Paul, but from the samples that I had heard, it sounds really dark in thick Mahogany guitars. I've been considering trying an Alternative 8 w/ a Screamin Demon on my Basswood bodied Ibanez RG-570. But your comment about the Lil' SD has me thinking that maybe a full humbucker SD in the neck may be a decent option to try.

That neck pickup looks way too badass. How'd you engrave that and what's that symbol?

Thank you! It's an "Om" symbol from the Hindu religion. In a nutshell, it means "Peace and tranquility." It represent the vocal vibration one makes during meditation in the quest to attain Nirvana.

I sent the image to the guys at Greasy Groove (http://www.greasygroove.com/). The engraving is a bit more subtle in person than it appears in the picture, but I'm very happy with it. They ran me a total of $48.94, including shipping, for both p'up covers and the engraving. I was surprised cause I figured it would be much more expensive. :D

Whoa, what's the story with that finish (on the LP)? Looks really unique!

Thank you! It's a Les Paul Studio Swirl. Gibson calls the finish, "Silver Swirl Burst." They were made in 2011 in 4 different swirl burst finishes: green, blue, gold, and silver. If I remember correctly, they made 200 of each color.

hey guys,
new to the forum and was hoping I could ask your opinions on a pick-up combo choice i'm thinking of buying.
for my '04 Les standard I was thinking a "pearly gates" for neck, and SH-14 at bridge, anyone have any experience
with this combo ?? thanks for any help ...

How do to the covers affect tonal quality?

How do to the covers affect tonal quality?

How does the cover affect the toneal quality?

Have the PG in my neck reversed as its a bit too dark, but a perfect blend uncovered reversed...nice mids...was thinking of covers.

Thanks...nice job.

Thanks! I did notice a very slight drop in output. But then I raised each pup up 1/8", and the issue was resolved. Since I coil split my p'ups, I tend to use the PGn split for my cleans (which is a sparkling clean with increased clarity), and the full humbucker for leads (and it sings)! So I'm happy with the covers. I do agree, however, that without increasing the highs, the full PGn humbucker in the clean channel can sound a bit dark. My advise would depend on whether you have your p'ups coil split or plan on doing so in the future.

Hi timbo65. Welcome to the forum. I'm relatively new, myself. As for the Pearly Gates neck on a Les Paul... if you read my review up in the first post, I describe it in detail. Overall, it's my favorite neck p'up on a Les Paul, especially if you get a coil split setup. Irregardless of my opinion, you need to offer some information on what you're looking for. What genre(s) do you play? What kind of gain are you looking for... high/medium/low? What kind of overall tone are you looking for... vintage/modern? What kind of cleans are you looking for... dirty with lots of character, or do you like a flat sounding clean tone? What kind of amp do you use? What kind of guitar are the pickups for? This information is required to guide you in the right direction.

I've tried Alt8 - Demon combo in alder body - maple neck/rosewood fboard LP and mahogany body/maple top - mahogany neck/rosewood fboard LP. In alder LP, Alt8 is crispier and Demon has more sparkle while in mahogany LP this combo is somewhat fuller and rounder. Alt8 is not dark in mahogany. It doesn't react like most hot pickups. It doesn't feel like a hot pickup if you don't want to - if that makes any sense. Alt8 - Demon combo are about clarity, definition and articulation. They're badass too in a superstrat. While the more traditional/classic Custom - PG are my default pickups of choice, Alt8 - Demon have become my favorite combo too.

Great info. I appreciate it!

I've been on the cusp of grabbing an Alt8/SD combo for a little while now, and I think you just tipped me into putting them on the "next to buy" list. Hopefully you can help me with this dilemma though. The Ibanez RG570 has an H/S/H setup. So if I were to put an Alt8 in the bridge and a Demon in the neck, what would be a good candidate for a middle single pickup that would match these two? Perhaps a cool rails? Since the Alt8 and SD are both hot p'ups, I figured a cool rails would allow me some variety with some decent vintage tones. Hmmm... :33:

Re: Review/Pics of my Les Paul w/ NEW P'ups (Custom/PGn), Pots (Dual Coil Split), & C

Why would you need quasi-vintage tone in a hot rod guitar? I tried Alt8-Demon in HH superstrat and actually I'm not a fan of strat middle pickup. The only stratish guitar I have is a Jazzcaster/Stratomaster, a Jazzmaster with strat middle pickup and strat trem. And I don't use the middle pickup on it's own. The 3rd position is bridge-neck. That said if it were me, I'd track down a YJM Fury (has tapped option ... never tried it, just curiosity).

I was thinking it would've been a good option to increase the versatility of the guitar? Just a different tone for s**ts and giggles to play around with. :scratchch
