Reviving a dead PU.

Hey,

So I have an old Quarter Pounder lying in my closet. I used to use it, but when I installed it recently, I got the weakest signal possible, and it reads 0.0k DC resistance. Anyone wanna help me through this open heart surgery?

Re: Reviving a dead PU.

it depends on whats wrong with it. if its something simple like ehdwuld said then it isnt a big deal. if the coils broken and it needs a rewind then its a little harder.

Re: Reviving a dead PU.

The solder joints on the outside of the pickup aren't touching or anything, if that's what you mean by "knocked together". The windings and leads are attached just fine to the solder joints. Is there any way to figure out what exactly is the problem?

Re: Reviving a dead PU.

is it dead at the two contacts on the pup itself?

Re: Reviving a dead PU.

then best case senario is the break is in the first few winds. you would need to unsolder the hook up wires, remove the solder from the brass grommets (solder sucker works best for this) then try and unwind the coil till you find the break. sounds fun huh?

if you attempt this be VERY careful, the wire is the size of human hair and can break pretty easily

Re: Reviving a dead PU.

Well, this PU is a goner.

I accidentally disconnected the wrong end first, and it's burried under all the other wire.

Guess I gotta get this puppy re-wound if I want it to be worth anything?

Re: Reviving a dead PU.

yup and the cost of a rewind is not that different from a new pup. the benefit is that you can have pretty much whatever you want.

Re: Reviving a dead PU.

On the bright side, you are now in an unparalleled opportunity to experiment with winding techniques, if you're so inclined.

Are you suggesting that I wind it myself, or ask whoever I pay to rewind it to wind it a certain way? I doubt my first rewind could be considered an experiment in different techniques as much as a first go-around.
