I will say that it does make a difference, if you have stainless steel strings and are wondering why you don't sound like a player using Flatwounds, or vice versa. Same with gauges, if you use 9's tuned down a half step and another player uses 11s at standard, it's going to be a different sound.
If you are talking nickle plated 10's, one brand vs another, recording and mixing techniques will make more of a difference.

Seriously, though, Les was a hybrid of Jazz and Chet Atkins style country. It is simultaneously admirable and incomprehensible that a twenty five year old should suddenly wish to mimic the great man.
As a musician, W. L. Polfuss esquire was a complete and utter mofo. How close to you wanna get? Enough to get yo' arm mashed up?
The guitars that the man himself played were somewhat at odds with the mainstream product that we all know and love (or loathe).

My original post was an honest question, expressed as a joke. Either humor doesn't transfer well on this board or most of you are inept.
There is an obvious difference between string brands, gauges and picks. My nylon picks don't sound at all like my tortoise shell based ones. Thin picks don't sound like thick picks.
In all sincerity, I was simply wondering what a player like Les would usually use, since the genres that he tended to play are very foreign to me.
That's all, you can all go back to making america great again or whatever it is you guys do on a thursday afternoon.
