Rewired guitar sounds dull????

I NEED HELP123

I bought a killswitch and installed it today, it's now in the place where the tone pot used to be. I also replaced the volume pot with a CTS 1meg pot.

I also replaced the output jack with a stereo switchcraft jack because the killswitch has a LED and I want it to light up when I plug in the guitar.

Now when I plug it in, the guitar sounds very dull. The output also seems lower. The killswitch does work, and I checked all connections.

I replaced all the wire from the guitar with wire from an old computer. The following is written on the wire: CSA type LL47556 TR-64 18AWG FTI 90 degrees celsius -F- LM.

Could the wire be the problem??

The guitar sounded great before, but now it sounds like sh*t. I rewired another guitar with the same wire and it also was very dull, but I thought that was because of the guitar itself, not the wiring.

I hope someone can help.

18 gauge wire is Overkill but it won't cause a tone problem. Could your LED be wired in backwards?

Thanks for the reply!

I checked, the LED isn't wired backwards. It also isn't attached to the pickup, so i don't think that's the problem. The + side of the led is wired to a resistor then to a battery, the - side of the battery goes to the second lug of the stereo jack. Then when you plug your cable in, it connects to ground and the LED lights up.

Re: Rewired guitar sounds dull????

Could the killswitch possibly be wired backwards?? but I don't think you can wire a killswitch backwards. Right???

Re: Rewired guitar sounds dull????

I just re-soldered a few ground connections and all connections for the "hot" wires in the guitar. The guitar is louder now and not as muffled, but it is not "there" yet.

I'm now thinking there is something wrong with my soldering. Could someone explain to me what a bad solder joint looks like? I always aim for shiny solder joints, but on some joints they just won't turn shiny when cooled. I let the solder melt completely before letting it cool, but then sometimes when it's cooled it looks kind of dull. It's not "frosted looking" or that the solder didn't melt completely before cooling, but just a bit dull and not as shiny as some other joints.

Maybe it has something to do with my soldering iron. It was a cheap one from Conrad.

Dull is not necessarily a bad joint and shiny is not necessarily a good joint. Smooth is good, pitted or rough looking is bad. But still, smooth doesn't guarantee it's a good joint. Not smooth doesn't guarantee it's bad either but I'd never leave one like that.

Not all inclusive in any way, but ...

I could be wrong and doubt this is related, but dont all Reverends have treble bleed cap and bass roll off cap?

Thanks for the reply.

The joints I'm talking about are dull, but smooth, not pitted. I think the best option is to just re-solder all the joints. Hopefully it will be solved then.

I have done some research on bad solder joints and I will check all the solder joints tomorrow.

Re: Rewired guitar sounds dull????

I resoldered the joints and now it isn't dull anymore and it has got it's output back, the only things is that when I touch the bridge pickup it makes the same sound if you touch the tip of the output jack. It's louder when I touch the north coil. It's properly grounded so I don't know if it's supposed to do that or not. Does somebody know what's going on??

Re: Rewired guitar sounds dull????

That could be a sign of a reversed output jack...any chance that the negative side is connecting to jack tip?
