RG470/270

Bought the RG270 a month ago and gave it a slight teardown in anticipation of newer/better parts (whichever I could afford first)...

And yesterday, I won an eBay auction for this loaded body... ($275AU / $184US)

Obviously, I now have to take everything out of the 470 body and put it into the far nicer BLACK 270.

I'm a tad concerned about the oxidation on the tremolo and pickups, but if sound still comes out I think it should be fine.

Since they're both basswood, there's really no difference between a MIK and MIJ body, right?

Probably. Basswood is a reasonably consistent wood. However, you have no idea what the blue body sounds like, so you have no way to tell which one would sound better. Correct?

Bit of mojo on the pups and trem after 20-30 years is usually no big deal.

I think there are instances where the screw pattern for MIK and MIJ aanjs was slightly different, but you'll be able to verify that when the 470 body arrives. I've never verified this for myself; have swapped between MIK necks and that was not an issue.

I had a look at a 270 and 470 empty body and the pocket shapes look very similar, but of course the pocket of the 270 was painted over, so I couldn't see the screw holes. So I guess I can only wait.

That's a bit strange since they use the name neck type for the years 98/99. I guess it's possible.

I've never tried it myself. I had an RG570 that I never liked the color of (metallic green). So I wanted to get a new body for it. I liked the look of those Indonesian RG470's that were made of ash. But I was always warned that the neck pocket might not fit my guitar's neck.

I never got to do it, but I would've liked. I mean, the dimensions on yours are the same, as you pointed out. But I'm not sure the screw holes would line up. That's not such a big deal, TBH. I mean, you could easily fill those holes and redrill them if you needed to. As long as the neck pockets are the same width and depth.

My experience swapping Ibanez necks between bodies, you may be left with a significant gap in the pocket, or even clearance issue.

You may have to plug the holes (with real maple plug, not a dowel) and redrill.

But if you do that, you may find the bridge/strings are out of alignment, and the neck may need a bit of L/R rotation.

And of course, the lo-pro and edge trems have slightly different offset adjustment which takes a special tool to adjust.

When you start swapping parts, the differences start showing up.

These aren't plug and play.

Well, it arrived and yes, the neck doesn't fit in the pocket, if it did none of the screws would have lined up, and to make matters worse, the sender gave me a tremolo arm for I don't even know what, it fits, but there's nothing keeping it in place.

Lesson learnt? F*** no.

I paid $275AU/$184US for what is a very solid body for the beginnings of a great guitar. How much were these new? NFI. But even if I pay the EXORBITANT asking prices on eBay or Reverb for an actual RG470 neck and can track down a trem arm for less than $100, I'm still getting a guitar for a good price.

It will be right-handed, but once the strap bolts are in the right place, I'm good.

As for the RG270. I'll put the original tremolo back in, keep the tremolo arm somewhere safe, add locking tuners and be done.

It's got the EMG bridge pickup, it's destined for beating.

But these are "Later" projects. I've got something really fun on the way. Hopefully before the end of the month.
