Talk to me about the Custom Custom

It would surprise me if you didn't love the Custom Custom based on your original post and description of what you want. It is really a terrific pickup.

I have a Custom Custom in the bridge position of an HH Strat and a Pearly Gates at the neck. Really excellent pair. My Strat has an alder body and a maple neck/fb, so pretty different than your guitar. However, each of those pickups are voiced such that they seem to sound good in any guitar, regardless of woods and construction.

My HH Strat doesn't necessarily sound like a Les Paul, but it does sound like a great humbucker equipped guitar. The responsiveness of the pickups is excellent.

I use one in my Les Paul with the stock ‘57 Classic in the neck. It sounds amazing. I’ve also got the CC in a Warmoth Strat build. Sounds amazing there too. Easily one of my favorite pickups.

Custom custom seems likely to have too much of the spongy low mids in your Dear hardtail. Sh-5 custom with ceramic seems more logical to me. I guess you will realise very soon if this is working out or not. Let us know how it goes.

I agree with Aceman. For me the CC would not be my first choice in a set neck short scale guitar as the bass is too loose.

59/Custom is more versatile but I would just put a A2pro bridge in it.

Yeah - the bass response is gonna be a matter of taste....he may love it, think its ok, or call it unacceptable.

This pickup is a way different creature in a trem bridge Strat vs a Les Paul-esque situation. We'll see!

I don’t find the bass too loose at all with my Les Paul. If you’re playing Slayer or something then the CC is not for you. If you are playing hard rock and rock blues, it’s perfect. I’m in a Journey tribute and the CC is the bridge pickup for it. Heck, Neal has had it in his PRS sigs. Good enough for him, good enough for me.

I'll be sure to report back my thoughts once I've got one. I like to think it'll do what I want as I want that more classic flavour, but with more output.

Slayer - whilst legendary, is not needed so much. My band aren't that kind of wedding band!!!

As you mentioned, classic flavor with more output.....ballsy and sings.....yep, I think the CC is going to get you there. I love that pickup, definitely an all-time favorite and paired with the A2Pn is a perfect combo for that guitar in my opinion. I'll be very interested to hear what you think once you've gotten it and given it some fair playing time!

Update... Pickup installed, as well as a couple of other changes made to the guitar.

Initial thoughts after practicing at home was that it was just what I was after. It sounded great, promoted the right frequencies, and dynamically it was the right balance between being hot, but also being more 'classic' sounding. I see what people mean by it having 'fat mids', but I think that worked particularly well with this specific guitar. Can certainly imagine it not working well with some of my other darker sounding guitars.

I played it at a gig with it last night, and my experience was same again. It just sang! It worked great with overall the band mix. Critically, the audience was happy - so I clearly have the pickup to thank for that

To add to this, I also had a Freeway 6-way pickup selector toggle switch installed, as I wanted to have specific wiring options available to mimic those in my prs (my number 1). I was pleased with that too and it worked well in the heat of the moment.

Congrats! It remains one of y favorite pickups because of those 'fat mids'.

It's a funny one, because for all the reasons I like it, I can equally see how others may not like it as much for exactly those reasons. I'm glad I went with it
