What replacements can i use for the Rickenbacker Toaster pickups?

What causes them to jingle so much?

What causes them to Twang ?

Re: Rickenbacker Vintage/Toaster Pickups

I want more and more twang and jingle how do i get more twang and jingle?

Whats the different between twang and jingle?

The jaguars pickups twang the rickenbackers jingle

Whats the coils, wire, magnets they used for this?

Re: Rickenbacker Vintage/Toaster Pickups

also keep in mind that Rickenbacker toaster pickups aren't made as specific neck or bridge models- they are all the same usually around 7.8K ohms, plus, the two pickups are wired in phase, unlike most guitar sets which are wired 180 degrees out of phase.= hence most lower frequencies are covered up by pronounced mids.
Aftermarket pickups for Ric's are few and far between, mostly because the stock ones already do what they do so well, and so few Rickenbackers are sold as comparied to most other brands.
Ric offers two pickup choices, the so called Hi-gain, which comes standard in most models, and the Vintage Toaster pickups-
THe cost of the Vintage ones are around 100 bucks EACH, and can only be bought from a few selected dealers.

Re: Rickenbacker Vintage/Toaster Pickups

P.S. Ricks also use FLATWOUND strings-roundwounds sound awful with them, beleive me I've tried- all of these factors, the single coils, low output, inphase pickups, flatwound strings, not alot of the bridge in touch with the body(4 small screws), plus the maple they use for the bodies all contribute to the jingle-jangle sound.

Re: Rickenbacker Vintage/Toaster Pickups

One more thing- most Rick players use some sort of line booster or compressor to get a decent signal-McGuinn had some sort of preamp or compressor fitted into his 12 strings -I can't remember which device he used.

Yeah, you are right (again) the McGuinn sig model had some sort of compressor built in. Those guitars are pretty rare, IIRC. Now he's using the Janglebox (www.janglebox.com), which is a great pedal. I wonder what he used on the Byrds albums.

Marvar, do you have any idea how the three pickup Rics are wired...what combo of pickups are available? Thanks. :)

Speaking of Rics, holy crap:

Re: Rickenbacker Vintage/Toaster Pickups

Thanks guys alot

Does The magnet create the twang?
Does the wire turns create the twang?

The magnet sets the ?
1.) "Q"?
2.) Notches/peaks?
3.) Frequency Response?
4.) The twang?

The wire turns sets the ?
1.) "Q"?
2.) Notches/peaks?
3.) Frequency Response?
4.) The twang?

Re: Rickenbacker Vintage/Toaster Pickups

Why would thinner wire and lower DC resistance produce Twang?

DC resistance is the wire turns?

Most Pickups have a "Flat frequency response" the Twang pickups have notches, Q's points, a "S" curve in the frequency response, more resonance why is that?

How do i get different frequency response curves ?

Twang pickup boost the midrange and has a midrange response curve?

Re: Rickenbacker Vintage/Toaster Pickups

sorry don't have the answers to these questions can u help me out please

Re: Rickenbacker Vintage/Toaster Pickups

No sorry im not playing games im trying to get the knowledge of pickup theory with my questions so i can make a Surf Twang pickup with multiple twang switches on it but i need to know the background of pickups first about all this so i can explain what i want to a desiger to make a custom surf twang pickup for me.

Re: Rickenbacker Vintage/Toaster Pickups

No the twang comes from the magnets and wire turns because the jaguar is
"8550" wire turns

Twang DC resistance is ?
Twang wire turns is around 8550
Twang magnet shape?
Twang magnet size?
Twang magnet strength?
Twang Q point?
Twang frequency response?
Twang Midrange curve (the pickup process) ?
Twang Impedance?
Twang pickup EQ?

How do i get different midrange curves out of a pickup?
I'm trying to change the midrange curves so they are not just "Flat" what changes the midrange curves? and shapes?

Re: Rickenbacker Vintage/Toaster Pickups
