Re: Ridiculous Amps!

Of the Boutique stuff (which I am becoming more and more dedicated to) I don't know half of what I'd like to. I love the Hotcat 100 sound clips

I do like my Z, however it is a single channel and not as versatile as some would want. I would recommend you looking into the 6545 which is the Z channel switching amp, one high gain side, and one side that has a punchy tweedish sound. The Dr. uses the EF-86 tube for the 45 side. Both sides have completely different preamp configuartions so it is like having two separate amps in one box. It also has EL-34s if I remember correctly. But it is 65 watts......so I you must have 100 you can rule it out.

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

Can't believe I'm the only one who voted Matchless. I actually wouldn't buy amps from any of those brands probably. Maybe Fuchs. Most of it is overpriced for what you get, though.

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

The reason I'd suggest a Bogner Ecstasy 101B is because it's got the most advanced preamp section of ANY tube amp, ever. It's not just a 3 channel amp....it's virtually got no limitations in it's flexibility. It's not like most multichannel amps, where you're stuck with 3 nicely voiced channels. You can literally get any tone ever made by an EL-34 amp, and don't be leery about it's clean channel...the thing will smack down a Twin!
On each channel, you can configure the EQ and gain structure about 8 ways, and THATS without even turning knobs, just flicking mini switches! I've got mine setup to sound like a Bassman, a nice woody/glassy plexi, and the red channel is something I constantly tweak, anywhere between a JMP to nuclear meltdown. Then, on the footswitch, you've got a boost for the channels, FX loop on/off, and standby.
On the back panel, I've got a mixable FX loop, Hotplate loop, Class A/AB, 1/2 power, and even cabinet assigning, which Bogner no longer offers on stock models.
No matter what amp I ever own, it'll never equal what the Bogner can do. It's not possible to make a tube amp that sounds that good and does more.

Wow, lots of great suggestions.
Most folks would say the Two Rocks and the Fuchs are in the same sonic landscape. The Fuchs gets some negative pub about its circuit boards, but I don't think that should be a factor. They are thick and high quality. Not prone to deforming or having traces break. Excellent rugged reputation just like the Two Rocks.

IMO the bad publicity from the Fuch circuit board would wash away if they but a bit more effort in explaining their choice. The naive explanation of bad p2p vs. good PCB doesn't really do it. Same with the Buddas Series II.

Regardless, if you play a Fuch you'll hear something quite unique and powerful.

Benjy 26, where in Texas are you?.......

I am in the process of building my own amp line and versatility is what I specialize in......

Hopefully not being too optimistic, my designs are so radical that they are either going to be "revolutionary" or fail miserably....(regardless, I'm building at least my dream amp!)

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

That sounds great Jeff, can't wait to hear it! Hope you'll be making a 220V edition for us European players :)

El Paso. What kind of voicing are you thinking of putting into your amps?

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

Thanks for all the great suggestions gentlemen. :)

I guess since I'm still saving up (it's going to take a while), i have time to track down all the choices and try to play, or at least hear them in person.

Man, do I have some work to do! :smack: :burnout:

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

Bogner Ecstasy!!! That amp is just amazing! I can litteraly dial in ANY sound I want with it. Just read what Gearjoneser says or check out the Bogner site and the soundclips.

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

I think it just depends on the sound and style of musicyou are looking for. Don't buy an amp because someone else tells you it is a good amp. Buy it because YOU like the sound of it. My advice is to do some test driving at local stores and dealers, even if they are not in your area. If you are going to spend the type of money that you are talking about, it is worth the drive. Who knows, buy the time you get the money, there might be something else you like. Just my two cents.

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

With that much money i would go and buy a Cornford Hellcat or MK50, without a doubt. other amps to consider are engl, i personally love my Peavey5150 half stack its amazing but i would love a cornford to go alongside it. :P

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

dammit, I had hopes that I would be the first one to suggest it...

but diezel needs to be considered, at the very least.

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

i'd get an orange :-p

EDIT oh dang, i just saw about the diezel's too. arghhh yeah with that price range, that's what i'd go with. just because those things are so ungodly.

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

if your going to spend that kind of cash on a head there is only one choice IMO...diezel...but if you want to spend a bit less than that and still get a killer amp i say engl savage 120.

here are a bunch of engl clips if you haven't heard them before.

There's no doubt that Diezel's are versatile as hell, but they are insanely loud (aren't they around 160w?) and they're more geared towards metal and hardcore kids. The Herbert does crank out some good classic rock though ;)

Yep, Diezels sound great, but they have more gain and output than I will ever, ever need. :burnout:

I did play one, an ODS 100 head through an old Marshall 4x10" cab. I played it with my Hamer and it sounded incredible. It's what got me looking at boutique amps in the first place. :newangel:
