Re: Ridiculous Amps!

If you're going to go ridiculous then you really ought to just go all-out and consider a Dumble.

The downside is that you won't be able to sleep in the thing...even though it's probably roughly the price of a house.

But the upside is that the odds are the prices are only to get even more stupid in the future for them with people like Carlos Santana and John Mayer hoarding them.

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

And it's a good thing John Mayer uses a Dumble......

I couldn't imagine "Your Body's A Wonderland" on a lesser amp!!!!

You're not going to find anyone who dislikes Mayers pop stuff more than me.

But with that said the guy is a monster Blues player. Chops and tone for days. I can think of very few cats that would put a Dumble to good use and Mayer's on the "A" list.

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

Yeah, I keep hearing that.....from everyone BUT him!

Where can I hear him play something worth hearing?
I'm not buying a CD..............the only thing worse than hearing what I've heard out of him is WATCHING him do what he does.

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

honestly, there are so many great amps out there nowadays

I would rather approach things from the angle of "which amp is best for my style?"

you might spend some time researching over on The Gear Page, then play every amp you can

I wouldn't limit myself to 100 watt heads either, since there are a lot of amps with less power that are very loud with great cleans, such as a Komet

it's really a matter of finding the best amp for you

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

I have yet to find a recording of John really playing some bad ass blues, but if you can catch him on TV you'll see...I saw him on Austin City Limits a while back with Buddy Guy and I will admit that Buddy stompedhis ass BUT he did give it a good go!

VERY WELL SAID...I also would add that the most expensive amp is often not the right or best choice...these days there are lots of amps that can be had for less than $750.00 that are quite good...

He does a very impressive conver of "Castles Made Of Sand."

Hit the usual peer-to-peer networks for it.

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

Man...I'm going to give you the same advice Gearjoneser gave me and which I'm glad I took:

Get a Matchless DC-30 or the single 12 version, the SC-30.

I love mine and will hang onto it forever!

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

I only say this cuz most of the amps you named are expensive as hell and are almost never all in one shop----Asking people to cast a vote for one amp out of ten, when they've probably only heard 2 or 3 of them in person is bogus. But it's a good place to start. If you're gonna drop 3K+ on anything DO NOT LISTEN TO SOME SCHUCKS ON A MESSAGE BOARD!!! With that kinda dough, you should have the nutsack to walk into any store and demand to hear amps back to back. So with that said, you really need to get yourself an A/B switch, a Music Man HD 150, and a Peavey 5151. I've also heard great things about the brand new Peavey head. I don't recall the model, but it's green you can't miss it. love blake

How's the clean headroom on a DC-30? I've always been intrigued by those amps, but the low wattage rating scares me a bit.

Don't worry, bro. Plenty of nutsack around here.;)

The thing is, there's not a lot of well stocked shops in my area.

I like the tones my friend gets out of his HD series Musicman, but to be honest, 5150's have always sounded like @ss when I played through them.

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

There are two ways of thinking.

If I were going to spend this kind of money I would look at a Komet. I have a freind who I respect his opinion and this guy has had all major gear over the years... He says the Komet is the best Amp he ever played thru. I would have to play thru one to confirm this but it is a well designed well made Amp. It is based on Trainwreck tecnology. Ken Fisher who designed and built trainwreck amps has designed the circuit in the Komet.

Or the other way is to buy a "vintage" Amp that will run slightly more than the amount you mention. A 50W or 100W Plexi.... A White Twinn from the very early 60's. A Blackface Vibroverb!! Drool!!!

Re: Ridiculous Amps!

The Lone Star is absolute garbage. I had two of them and they both sounded like ass. The reverb was terrible, the OD was terrible, the little switches made no change in sound AT ALL! Don't even bother checking one out. $1800 friggin paperweight! I'd go for the Buddha or one of the other HIGH END boutique amps mentioned here.

Really ?? Serious sh*t
I thought that the lonestar was one of the great ongoing amps although I didn't test it out myself
Seriously I find that the F-30 and MArk III which I tested out the other days was frankly the best sounding clean tone I ever heard in my life. Their distortion is just another story for me =)
