PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are voting for your favorite riff in Round 1 of the December 2009 Riff-Off. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here. In this round, there are eight head-to-head matches. Be sure to check out and vote for your favorite riff in the other seven Round 1 matches, also found in the Tips and Clips room. To view the bracket for this month's Riff-Off, go here.

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Both riffs sounded great but Riffernaut's had this sort of twist at the end of the fragments in the riff that kept haunting me.
Good battle!

another one that was hard to vote - both deserve to go through and both are better than mine by far

i honestly want to encourage both of these guys to finish their riff into a song and record them ... when these clips finish playing, i find myself bummed that the song didnt kick in :D

I'll bet you're not very good at poker.

they both had a really cool boogie to them. i think cyber's had more swagger, while riffer's had more of a cool meat & potatoes rock vibe

My vote is in. Both excellent riffs. I'm really impressed with the quality of the submissions so far.

cyber's rocked. I loved the little turnaround mini-riff at the end.

Nice rocky tone, nice composition. I kinda wish a riff like this had been attacked a little more forcefully with the right hand - it might have given it the attitude it would have needed to topple a powerhouse of a contender it found in CyberBKP.
Even so, it's clear the player here knows what they're doing. I suppose I just found this riff a tad derivative. No part of it surprised me, and while it's definitely a riff, that's all I'm really getting from it at this point.

CyberBKP
Wow! Nice! Talk about a tight, rocking performance. The muted notes in the little descending run really makes this riff to my ears. That, combined with the cool and unexpected accents and timing in this riff makes it the clear winner in this contest, and is one of my fav's overall.
Also, you can tell it was double-tracked, but just barely. That's no mean feat - there are a lot of notes here and I have to give kudos for such a tight performance.
