PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are voting for your favorite riff in Round 1 of the December 2009 Riff-Off. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here. In this round, there are eight head-to-head matches. Be sure to check out and vote for your favorite riff in the other seven Round 1 matches, also found in the Tips and Clips room. To view the bracket for this month's Riff-Off, go here.

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

This one was tough, but in the end I had to go with the one that appealed to me more.

holy crap this one is hard, both are frickin' cool. i'll save this one for last....

Re: Riff-Off 1.1: Superbeast vs. Antonio "Tony" DiMarco Thunderbottom

These are two good riffs, I think superbeast's riff would work better in a verse-riff type context, whereas Thunderbottom's riff has an almost Trans-Siberian Orchestra feel to it.
Both very interesting, I like how superbeast walks his intervals down, it sounds to me like his riff's base is going from a perfect 5th, keeping the root note, going to an augmented 4th, to a perfect 4th to a Major 3rd. Overall, they're both really badass.
I think it's a tie, really.

Indeed, a very very hard decision to make but in the end it came down to dynamics. One these riffs showed more dynamic control.
Awesome riffs guys.

I love the European power-metal feel of Thunderbottom's. Brilliantly designed and executed. Well done, sir.

i figured out what thunderbottom's sounds like to me-iron maiden's transylvania. not exact, but definitely the same style. mixed with the robot-air-guitar part from bill and ted 2:D

Haha Luca Turilli from Rhapsody of Fire is a contestant?

Re: Riff-Off 1.1: Superbeast vs. Antonio "Tony" DiMarco Thunderbottom

both of these are stellar - both better than mine by far ... shame that only one gets to go forward
they both seemed to me to be more of a song fragment than a riff ...

nicely done both

I definitely liked thunderbottoms.

I felt like I was on a boat, in my helmet, with my sword, waiting to storm a beach. I'm hoping all the while that if I die some beautiful chick will whisk me off to Valhalla where I can kick butt 24/7 without rest

My wife described this as "heavy-metal Scottish." It seems fitting.

Just came across the threads about the riff-off. Cool idea, and both of these riffs were great. I like the style contrast too but in the end Superbeast's pulled me a little closer. Tough choice though.

Re: Riff-Off 1.1: Superbeast vs. Antonio "Tony" DiMarco Thunderbottom

Wow, both are very skilled players here. But at the end of the day, I like catchy, and Superbeast's was catchier to my ear.

Re: Riff-Off 1.1: Superbeast vs. Antonio "Tony" DiMarco Thunderbottom

I am surprised at the poll results so far, because I consider these to be very equal. Thunderbottom's has that excitement factor going for it though.

Well done gentlemen!
