Voted. Both good riffs, 'orrible sounds (i know, sound is not a part of it, but it makes listening hard with such dreadful tones.....if i'm gonna have to keep having my ears hurt, i'm wishing everyone had to play the riffs on acoustics).

Re: Riff-Off 1.1: Superbeast vs. Antonio "Tony" DiMarco Thunderbottom

With as much respect possible to everyone in this competition, I have to say that this round could easily have been the finals. These are both VERY good, and it's a shame that one of these two has to leave the competition after the first round.

Re: Riff-Off 1.1: Superbeast vs. Antonio "Tony" DiMarco Thunderbottom

Both riffs were good. If I didn't know better, they could have been written by the same person.

TOUGH ONE

Antonio "Tony" DiMarco Thunderbottom
Ok, resisting the urge to award points on a purely "metalocalypse reference" basis, this is still a really REALLY solid contribution.
I'm loving the feeling I get here of heading out from the fjords to the open sea, sword in hand, etc. etc.
The playing is also clinically tight - just perfect for this kind of riff. It couldn't be cleaner.
I actually pulled one of my guitars off the wall and figured out the fingering to this one for fun.

Superbeast
Another pure-quality submission. Where the last one had an immediacy that couldn't be ignored, this one seems to simmer and build. Very sad sounding. I like this a lot. I kind of wonder if it's not technically TWO riffs with the refrain bit in the 2nd half, though.
Despite being a more-than-solid submission, I think "Tony" edges this battle on the merit of sheer bombast.

So make a submission in the next tournament and show us how it should really be done. ;)

I liked both tones. Mind you I wouldn't dial in either for myself, but that doesn't mean they weren't good. Out of curiosity, do you not consider either of those tones good for the style of music? I liked how the Marshall-y flavour was used for Superbeast's riff instead of Thunderbottom's. There's too many **** kids 'round here that play a Les Paul or Gibson something through a Marshall for scene/hardcore/emo tones and it gets old.

Mr. Thunderbottom sir – in no way did I mean your riff is reminiscent of those genres. Keep up the real metal riffery.

Part of it is that Keith seems to have cranked down the bit rate of the mp3 files in order to reduce server space and download time (and possibly also to level the playing field re. recording quality).

I know for a fact that my entry as I submitted it sounds fuller and clearer than what's available for voters to listen to. I'm not complaining, and I completely understand the reasons for doing this. I'm only talking about it here to explain why the audio quality might not be up to most standards.

I don't think I changed the bit rate at all. PM or email me if you feel the bit rate is screwed up on the posted MP3 file.

:cool2::cool3:

Me likey BOTH!

Superbeast has a Queensryche feel to it.

The Maiden/Eurometal feel of Thunderbottom is compelling.

Ooh. Hard choice. :dunno:

Re: Riff-Off 1.1: Superbeast vs. Antonio "Tony" DiMarco Thunderbottom

superbeast's, especially the 2nd half, just screams mid-80s priest ballad or intro. the tone is dead on, and the chordage is really reminiscent as well. think "night comes down."

thunderbottom's, as everyone else has noted, really does have that excitement factor to it. just makes you want to jump out of your longboat and do some hearty raping & pillaging, followed by imbibing substantial volumes of mead.

coulda sworn i commented on this one earlier, but it looks like i missed it.

I agree. Each of these does an excellent job of capturing a specific feeling.

Voted. One brought a smile to my face listening to it. Great jobs! I enjoyed both very much.

Since the rules thread said we can reveal our identities once we've been eliminated, I'd like to thank those who voted for me (Superbeast - yeah I been on a Rob Z kick lately) and congrats to Thunderbottom for the definitely superior riff.

Hell, even I voted for you

See you guys/gals for the next Riff Off with a new name, and this time, I'm coming for blood :D

Rule #3.

3.) Participants are to choose a secret "battle name" and PM it to PUH.
This name will be used in the battle posts by PUH instead of your actual username.
The anonymity provided by this rule will keep the focus of the battle on the riffs, instead of the users who submitted them.
Please do NOT reveal your real name until after you've either been eliminated or won the final round.

Since I was eliminated.....

DrNewcenstein, that riff you wrote reminds me of a little demo i put together! it's right here, the track is called ice blast highway.
