This was a tough one. I like them both!

Tie suggestion: have an SD person (Evan for instance) cast the tie-breaking vote.

So a variation on a set riff? I'm not quite sure how that would work, although I'm open to the idea if it's fleshed out a bit more.

It would be like doing a cover song and voting on who did it better, had the most original idea, who took the biggest risk and pulled it off, etc.

Have a 3rd party write a riff just for the tie breaker and then have each contestant do their own version of that riff. Allowing the contestant to choose their own key, tempo, etc.

Hmmm...I think I'd prefer a riff-off in which each contestant had to submit a new riff. The winner of that breaks the tie.

Deferring to Keith, here. I don't really care either way - tiebreaker vote or lightening round - either is fine with me...

I like the idea of a lightning round because it puts contestants in a situation a session man might find himself in. You have to come up with something good under pressure and with little time to plan. Some people really excel in these situations.

Keith, what if we gave YOU the tiebreaker vote?

Re: Riff-Off 1.1: The Walkin' Dude vs. Robin Williams

well, point of clarity here ... keith, by definition, would be being placed in a position where the exact opposite of impartiality would be required ... he would be put in a position where he would have to make a subjective call ... he would HAVE to be partial to the one he liked best ... now, i believe he could be unbiased by the knowledge of the true identities of the contestants .. but that is not the same as impartial

i suggest that a truly unbiased and impartial method would be something like whoever submitted their entry first would be the winner in the event of a voting tie .. but asking a human to do it is not impartial

Well I have not voted yet....

Sly to the rescue!

Surely for something whose only reward is bragging rights would not drive someone to say "that guy's a prick, I'm not voting for him just because of that"?

I'm ok with him having the tie-breaker vote.

I trust Keith to be impartial, but I feel like the contestants may cry foul. If not in this tournament, maybe in future ones. Keith does, after all, know who each one is, and just that knowledge may subconsciously lead to bias. I second RD's suggestion of having an SD guy break the tie.

My thoughts exactly... no offense Keef. I feel like the anonymity of the riff-writers is what's really key to this contest. Besides, if an SD guy got in on the voting, we might get a mention on the main page? ;)

Man... tough call on this one. But I made my choice.

i think putting the host in a position to disappoint a forum bro is very not cool
